What does it really mean to understand poverty—and what does it take to create lasting change?

In this episode of Karimu Talks, Julian Page, Director of the Mikuyu Tanzania project, shares an important perspective on how organizations should approach poverty elimination.

Rather than simply responding to problems as they appear, Julian emphasizes the importance of understanding what poverty is, identifying what people lack access to, and thinking strategically about how to create sustainable solutions.

One of his key messages is simple:

“Start from the end and work your way back.”

For Julian, effective development isn't about simply diving into a problem. It's about understanding the desired outcome, planning strategically, and thinking about how organizations can eventually step away while the community continues moving forward independently.

A thought-provoking conversation about power, strategy, sustainability, and what it really takes to eliminate poverty.

How does a family of five survive on just $0.50 a day?

That’s the reality facing families in Dabil Ward, Tanzania, where Karimu is beginning its next chapter of work.

The Dabil Ward survey is complete, covering 3,673 households and more than 20,000 people. The findings are sobering:

• Median family income: just $0.50/day
• Less than 2% have health insurance
• Only 12% of children are enrolled in middle school

But these numbers are not the end of the story.

They are the starting point.

Karimu has seen what is possible in Ayalagaya and Arri.

Through our entrepreneur program, 912 people have participated—and graduates have achieved a 342% increase in median income.

Today, the rate of extreme poverty in those communities is below 5%.

We believe that with opportunity, investment, and a community-led approach, Dabil can build the same path toward prosperity.

$0.50 a day is where they are starting. It is not where they will end.

Sometimes, lasting change begins with a very simple problem.

At one school in Tanzania, an old latrine was nearly full, creating such serious health concerns that the school was at risk of being shut down.

The community had already started building a new latrine, but they didn't have enough money to finish it.

When Don and Marianne visited the school and saw the conditions for themselves, they were shocked.

They couldn't understand how students and teachers were expected to learn in such poor conditions.

They committed $500 to complete the new bathroom—and they followed through.

That moment became more than the completion of a latrine. It marked the beginning of what would become the Karimu Foundation.

Today, Karimu's approach goes far beyond individual projects. By working alongside communities and investing in sustainable solutions, Karimu continues to focus on creating the conditions for lasting change.

Sometimes, changing lives starts with listening, showing up, and helping a community finish what it already started.

What is it like to visit a community where very few tourists ever go?

For this Karimu volunteer, the journey to Ayalagaya was one of the most adventurous travel experiences she had ever had. There are no typical tourist facilities or infrastructure—just an opportunity to experience everyday life alongside the community.

And despite the adventure, she felt completely safe and welcomed. ❤️

For the children, the visitors were a curiosity—and 12-year-old Farley quickly became surrounded by a group of young friends wherever she went. 🥰

It was an experience that went far beyond sightseeing: immersive, exciting, meaningful, and immensely rewarding.

Hi Team,

I am excited to share some amazing progress from our Thread of Hope project. The children have been making encouraging progress in developing their practical skills and confidence through the project.

One of the most exciting developments is that the children have now started making school bags. This is a great milestone because it shows that they are moving beyond learning the basic skills and are beginning to apply what they have learned to create useful and practical products.

It is also encouraging to see their creativity, commitment, and willingness to learn. With continued practice and guidance, I believe they will continue improving the quality of their work and develop even more skills.

What happens when someone recognizes how much opportunity has shaped their own life—and decides to help create those opportunities for others?

In this episode, Eduardo shares part of his personal journey: growing up between São Carlos and São José dos Campos, two technology centers in São Paulo, Brazil, and being fortunate enough to grow up around computers and technology.

After living in Europe and spending more than ten years in California, that experience shaped something much bigger than a career. Eduardo explains how realizing the role that luck and opportunity played in his own trajectory led him to make it part of his mission to help remove luck from the equation and create more equal opportunities for others.

A personal story about opportunity, privilege, and the responsibility to help others access the same possibilities.
