🤩🤩 A fall surprise in the field today - a new lamb!! 🎉🥰 Actually, there were two ewes and TWO new lambs! Observed from ~1,000m away, they stayed up high in steep escape terrain (lamb is underlined in yellow). Bighorn Institute has documented this incredible anomaly of ewes giving birth twice in the same calendar year several different years now.

It was great to be included in today’s Deserts Nature-Based Solutions Summit at The Living Desert! Great speakers this morning and we participated in the tabling portion and got to speak with many attendees! It’s nice to see how many potential collaborators and partners we have for conservation! Thanks to Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy, Mojave Desert Land Trust, California Natural Resources Agency, and The Living Desert for hosting the summit!

👀 This ram has a partial, corneal opacity in his left eye. The front part of his eye is blue and the back half is brown like normal. He probably has partial vision in this eye, which was likely caused by an injury. Bighorn sheep are incredibly resilient! 💪🤩

⭐️ Throwback Thursday ⭐️
Drawing blood from a ewe during a capture back when we captured and collared the bighorn sheep in our study area. Now, CA Fish and wildlife is in charge of that. Proud that we had no capture-related mortalities after capturing hundreds of adult bighorn, which is the exception, not the norm.

⭐️ Throwback Thursday: Executive Director, Jim DeForge, bringing a sick lamb in for treatment back in the 80s, yes, with a helicopter. Hundreds of thousands of private dollars were spent to rescue and rehabilitate sick lambs in our local mountains and release them back or have them be part of our captive breeding program. This is a huge part of why we get to see sheep in our mountains today. Grateful to be part of Bighorn Institute’s conservation efforts for the endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep.

This old boy is DOWN TO THE BONE on his right horn. All bighorn sheep have a bony core inside their hollow horn sheath. They have blood vessels in the horn sheath and they grew their entire lives; they do not shed their horns. This photo shows the many layers that make up a horn sheath so you can see it has degraded substantially. Eventually, he may lose that horn where the bone is exposed if he hits it hard enough. By that time, the tissue will be dead & he will be fine, just lopsided. There are a number of rams in the wild that have a broken off horn.
