provides scholarships/honorariums to black students, and promotes black youth development in the U.S., the Caribbean, and in Africa. It was named for their parents, Vessie & Leon Mitchell and Elva & Aidsand Riggins. The acronym ,VELA, is derived from the names Vessie, Elva, Leon, and Aidsand; the matriarchs and patriarchs of the mid-twentieth century Mitchell and Riggins Families, who raised most

of their children and grandchildren in Compton, California during the 1950s to 1990s.These elders are honored for their dedication to family, church, and community, and for joining with other strong black parents and grandparents (Mr. Herman Stokes, Mrs. Lee Omia Clegg, Mr. Sam Hill, Mr. Aaron Wade, Mr. Melvin Woods, Mr. George Taylor, Mr. James, and so many others) to provide the foundation for their succeeding generations to become Spiritually, Mentally, Physically, and Economically successful. VELA is an approved California non-profit corporation (a 501c3 public charity), dedicated to improving life for as many African American, African, and Caribbean Children as we can effectively touch; by supporting their spiritual, health, educational, and financial needs. We solicit direct tax deductible contributions from individual and corporate supporters, and provide appropriate tax deductible receipts. We are an all volunteer organization. We use no paid employees. We hold musical programs, group dinners, and other social and entertainment events to raise funds. However, there will be no tax deduction available for such events sponsored by VELA, since our policy will be to price the tickets at or below the reasonable market value for the entertainment received.
