Today in 1967, Thurgood Marshall was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson. That August, the Senate confirmed his nomination, and Marshall was officially sworn in, becoming the first African American justice in the history of the nation’s highest court.

A Baltimore native, Marshall earned his law degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He went on to build an extraordinary legal career, serving as chief counsel for the NAACP. Over the years, Marshall argued 32 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and won 29, including the pivotal Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954, which struck down segregation in public schools.

His fearless work in the courtroom and relentless fight for justice cemented Marshall’s legacy as one of the most influential legal minds and civil rights champions in American history.
