AAUW Flagler County Branch

AAUW Flagler County Branch AAUW Flagler is a branch of the national organization American Association of University Women. AAUW has been empowering women since 1881.

One of more than 1,000 branches, AAUW Flagler began in 1984 when area women recognized a community need to support the goals of higher education and advance issues for women. AAUW Flagler proudly reinforces and sustains educational goals for middle and high school students, continuing education professionals, and undergraduate and graduate university scholars through an array of grants and scholar

ships. We engage our members by featuring guest speakers at our regular meetings, encouraging spirited literary discussions with Reading Women, and organizing events that allow us to advance the next generation of women leaders. General Meetings and Luncheon are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month, September through May. Our monthly newsletter, “The Coastline”, keeps members up-to-date with activities and our numerous achievements. Our AAUW Yearbook lists the name, address, contact, and college information for all members.

We support equal protection under the law and honor Thurgood Marshall for his achievements!

, Thurgood Marshall was named the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. He served on the court for 24 years.

Before joining the bench, Marshall was one of the nation’s most influential civil rights lawyers. He successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that ended legal school segregation in the United States.

His legal work helped reshape constitutional rights and expand equal protection under the law.

Women began integrating the Armed Services decades ago. We honor and celebrate their contributions!

Today, we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day, which commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act in 1948.

The law marked a turning point in U.S. military history, granting women the right to serve permanently in the regular armed forces rather than only during times of war. It opened new opportunities for military service and leadership, while laying the groundwork for future generations of women to serve their country in every branch of the armed forces.

A visit to Seneca Falls is worth the trip!

If you are walking through Seneca Falls, you'll see numerous markers and statues celebrating the women's rights movement. One of those is a statue called "When Stanton Met Anthony." It was sculpted by Professor A. E. "Ted" Aub of Hobart and William Smith College and dedicated in Seneca Falls on July 18, 1998, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the first women’s rights convention. It stands on the corner of East Bayard Street & Spring Street.

The statue commemorates the moment when Amelia Bloomer introduced Susan B. Anthony to Elizabeth Cady Stanton on a street corner in Seneca Falls in 1851. Stanton later recalled the moment: “There she stood with her good earnest face and genial smile, dressed in gray silk, hat and all the same color, relieved with pale blue ribbons, the perfection of neatness and sobriety. I liked her thoroughly, and why I did not at once invite her home with me to dinner, I do not know.”

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s history in Daytona runs deep. Lots to explore, just down the road!

Hall Inductees Mary McLeod Bethune and Jacqueline Cochran are receiving new recognition from their home state of Florida.

In May, the Florida Historical Marker Council approved new historical markers honoring women across 12 counties, including markers recognizing Bethune and Cochran's lasting contributions.

Bethune transformed education and civil rights advocacy, founding Bethune-Cookman University and advising four U.S. presidents. Cochran became one of the most accomplished aviators in history, setting numerous flight records and leading the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II.

These markers help ensure their stories remain visible for future generations, connecting the places they called home with the legacies they left behind.

Women are still fighting for pay equity!

Women are still fighting for pay equity!

On June 10, 1963, the Equal Pay Act was signed into law — a landmark step toward workplace equity in the United States. More than 60 years later, women still face persistent pay gaps that impact economic security, retirement savings, and opportunities for families and communities.

AAUW of Colorado continues to advocate for fair pay, transparency, and policies that help ensure every person is paid equitably for their work. Equal pay is not just a women’s issue — it is an economic justice issue.

When women are paid fairly, families thrive, communities grow stronger, and opportunities expand for everyone.
