Meet Molly — Finding Joy in the Little Things 🐾😄

Molly is a 6.5-year-old, 35-pound terrier mix who starts out a little timid... but clearly has a fun side hiding underneath.

When I was taking other dogs out, Molly was barking from her kennel with a sense of urgency, like she wanted to make absolutely sure I knew she was ready for her turn.

But when I finally approached her kennel?

Different dog.

She held her head low and seemed a little unsure right up until the leash went on.

Then suddenly she had a mission.

She marched straight to the exit door and, the moment we got outside, immediately took care of some very important business.

And then again.

And again.

Let's just say Molly seemed quite relieved to be outdoors.

For most of the walk she was more focused on the environment than on me. She wasn't seeking attention or checking in much, but when I offered some pets, she quietly stopped and accepted them with a calm, gentle demeanor.

Then we reached a grassy area that sat a little lower than the rest of the ground.

I looked at it and started saying:

"It might be wet here..."

I didn't even finish the sentence.

Before the words were fully out of my mouth, Molly had already thrown herself onto her back and started rolling around like she'd just discovered the greatest invention in canine history.

Maybe it was cool grass.

Maybe it was damp grass.

Maybe it was a spa treatment known only to dogs.

Whatever it was, Molly was fully committed.

And honestly?

Watching her roll around with that kind of enthusiasm was the first moment where her playful side really came shining through.

Molly feels like a dog who may need a few minutes to get comfortable, but once she does, little pieces of her personality start appearing.

And apparently one of those pieces is a deep appreciation for grass that may or may not be slightly wet. 🐶💛

Meet Yea Yea — Retired From Nonsense, Not From Fun 🐾😄

Yea Yea is a 12-year-old terrier mix who has officially reached the stage in life where she knows exactly what she likes, exactly what she doesn't like, and isn't afraid to share her opinion.

For example:

During our walk, Yea Yea decided at one point that she was done.

Not tired in a dramatic way.

Just:
"We've had a nice walk. I've seen enough. I'd now like air conditioning."

When I suggested we continue?

She put on the brakes.

Firmly.

Then calmly redirected me toward a nearby building with AC, as if she was the tour guide and I was the confused tourist.

She made a compelling argument.

Now, before you think Yea Yea spends all day napping and judging people from a couch, let me add something important:

She still has little sparks of fun.

Every now and then during our walk, she'd throw in a few happy hops, reminding everyone that while she's a senior lady, she hasn't completely retired from having a good time.

Think of her as someone who enjoys fun in moderation.

A little bounce.
A little walk.
Then back to the air conditioning.

Perfect balance.

At around 49 pounds, Yea Yea is basically a warm weighted blanket with opinions.

She's:
✔ House-trained
✔ Great on leash
✔ Friendly with kids
✔ Friendly with cats
✔ Affectionate
✔ A world-class couch companion

She's mastered the art of enjoying life's simple pleasures:

- Comfortable couches
- Good company
- Belly rubs and snuggles
- Climate-controlled environments
- Strategic naps

Yea Yea is looking for a family willing to appreciate the finer things in life right alongside her.

A soft place to land.
A person to love.
A couch to supervise.

And maybe someone willing to acknowledge that if a senior dog says it's time to head toward the air conditioning... It's probably time to head toward the air conditioning. 🐶💛

Update: adopted.

Meet Kita — Looking for Confidence, Friendship, and a Fresh Start 🐾💛

Kita is a sweet, playful, 7months old girl who ended up at the shelter through no fault of her own.

Her previous family was moving and couldn't bring her along. She arrived with her sister, Dixie, though the two can be adopted together or separately.

You can tell Kita is still adjusting to all of these changes.

She was excited to go outside and definitely ready for a break from the kennel. On the walk, she pulled a bit, especially whenever she spotted another dog.

But it wasn't the kind of pulling that made me worried.

It looked more like:
"Wait! A dog! Can we be friends?!"

Kita seemed genuinely interested in every dog she saw.

Once we got to the yard, though, a different side of her appeared.

She spent most of her time keeping some distance from me. It made me think she's still figuring out whether humans are safe and predictable.

And honestly, after losing her home, that's understandable.

Kita might thrive in a home with a confident, social dog who could help show her the ropes and demonstrate that humans can be pretty great after all.

Kita feels like a dog with:
✔ A playful side
✔ A social side
✔ A sensitive side
✔ A lot of potential

She may not be the dog who immediately jumps into your lap and acts like she's known you forever.

But she might be the dog who slowly learns to trust, and then gives you something even more special.

A friendship that was earned.

And those are often the best ones. 🐶💛

Meet Peach — Trying to Understand Her Whole World Changing 🍑🐾

Peach was surrendered to the shelter over the weekend after her owner had to move somewhere dogs were not allowed.
You could tell this wasn’t a careless decision. It felt heartbreaking for everyone involved — both the human and the dog suddenly trying to understand what just happened.

I had heard Peach was scared and reactive at the kennel gate, so when I approached her kennel, I purposely avoided making direct eye contact.

Dogs like Peach don’t need strangers crowding their space, waving treats in their face, or sticking fingers through kennel bars. Fearful dogs need calmness, predictability, and respect.

So I approached sideways and squatted down, making myself smaller and less threatening.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her slowly approach the gate.

I started talking softly and calmly.

No negative reaction.

So, still avoiding direct eye contact, I slowly stood up.

That’s when Peach gave a quiet little grumble and took a few steps back.

Fair enough.

I picked up the leash and squatted again.

She approached.

I carefully cracked the gate just enough to slip my hand and leash through — and that was actually the first time I looked directly at her.

She looked unsure… but focused on the leash.
That felt like a good sign.

I leashed her up as smoothly and quickly as possible, and we headed outside together.

It honestly seemed like she’s still learning the shelter environment because her head kept moving left and right, trying to process everything around her.

But one thing was very clear:

The mission was:
“Let’s get out of here.”

The second we got outside, she immediately went p*e — which honestly made me think she may very well be housebroken.

During the walk, Peach mostly stayed slightly ahead with a gentle pull, focused on moving and exploring.

In the yard, she investigated quietly. Taking pictures made her a little shy, but when I offered pets, she leaned into me and stared off into the distance for a long moment without moving.

So I stayed still too.

That moment felt important somehow.

Like maybe she needed contact… without pressure.

When it was time to return, Peach walked calmly back to her kennel and patiently waited to be unleashed.

I don’t think Peach is a “difficult” dog.
I think she’s a confused dog.

A dog who suddenly lost her home, routine, and understanding of life in a matter of days.

She may react at the kennel gate.
She may seem unsure.
But I truly believe that with time, patience, and safety, she could become deeply affectionate with her people.

And can we also talk about those ears?!

Flagler Humane Society is seriously becoming the place to find adorable spotted ears, and Peach is definitely contributing to the collection. 🐶💛

Meet Otis — The One That Broke My Heart Immediately 🐾💔

And now let me introduce you to a dog that completely ripped my heart into pieces the second I saw him.

His name is Otis.

He was in the very first kennel when I walked in.

Standing there with this quiet uncertainty, like he wasn’t sure if someone would choose him or simply keep walking.

I leashed him up, and the moment we started moving, he surprised me.

He found his way out of the building with enthusiasm — not chaotic puppy energy, but this determined little spark that somehow still exists inside him despite everything.

And you can immediately tell he’s older.

His body isn’t in the greatest shape, and looking at him creates this overwhelming feeling of:
“Buddy… why are YOU here?”

That’s honestly the only way I can describe it.

Outside, he politely went to the bathroom, calmly explored a bit, and then gracefully walked back to his kennel like a true gentleman.

Gentle.
Polite.
Sweet.

The kind of dog that makes you instantly wish someone would offer him:
✔ A soft bed
✔ A quiet home
✔ A comfy couch
✔ Peace
✔ Love for the rest of his years

Because let’s be honest…

Hoarding cases don’t end with dogs arriving at shelters because everyone was happily living together on vacation.

Otis has seen hard things.

And somehow?

He still chose kindness.

I also absolutely need to mention how adorable and funny he looks — seems like someone combined a Lab (?) and a Basset Hound (?) and created the cutest long-bodied, short-legged little gentleman imaginable.

Those bent little legs and stretched-out body make him completely unique.

And that fits him perfectly.

Because he really is unique.

A dog who survived difficult things without losing softness.

A dog who deserves to spend the rest of his life finally being someone’s beloved old man instead of another shelter resident.

And I really hope someone sees him the same way I did. 🐶💛

Meet Zelda — Sweet, Sensitive, and Ready to Feel Safe 🐾💛

Zelda is a beautiful 1 year old 54-pound girl who came from a hoarding situation involving 45+ dogs and 3 pigs.

And despite everything she’s been through, she still showed up as incredibly sweet.

Zelda was definitely shy during our time together, but not in a shut-down way. It actually felt more like she was looking for reassurance and comfort.

A few times she jumped up on me, not rowdily, but almost like:
“Hey… are we safe? Can I stay close?”
That was pretty heartbreaking and sweet at the same time.

She clearly enjoys attention and pets, and once outside she seemed relieved to just exist away from all the kennel noise.

In the yard, she spotted another dog walking by and gave one excited bark before quickly approaching the fence with very loose, playful body language. It was obvious she wanted interaction, not conflict.

She also walked nicely past other kennels without creating any drama, which was really nice to see considering the shelter environment can be overwhelming for dogs coming from situations like hers.

Zelda feels like a dog who may still be learning what safety and stability really look like.

But underneath that uncertainty?
There’s a social, affectionate, loving girl who seems very ready to connect.

She’s sweet.
She’s sensitive.
And she really seems to want someone she can lean on — emotionally and maybe physically too sometimes. 🐶💛

Meet Powder — Goofy, Happy, and Powered by Pure Enthusiasm 🐾☀️

Powder is a sweet, goofy 3 years old and 50-pound hound mix who was rescued from a hoarding situation involving 45+ dogs and 3 pigs.

And despite that beginning?

This boy somehow still walks through life with a happy attitude.

When it came time to leash him up, Powder was definitely excited. Jumpy, wiggly, enthusiastic — basically giving:
“OH MY GOSH WE’RE GOING OUTSIDE?!”

energy.

At the beginning of the walk he pulled pretty hard, but as the walk progressed, he started slowing down and settling into a better rhythm.
That’s a really good sign.

Once we got to the yard and he was off leash, Powder immediately made another important life decision:
Straight into the kiddy pool.
Apparently cooling off was top priority.

He didn’t pay a ton of attention to me during our time together because he seemed busy soaking in freedom, movement, smells, and all the exciting things outside a kennel…

But he did show interest in treats, which is always a great sign when it comes to future training and engagement.

Overall, Powder left me with a really positive impression.

He feels:
✔ Happy
✔ Energetic
✔ Goofy
✔ Optimistic

Like a dog who’s still figuring things out, but already choosing joy whenever possible.

After where he came from, that feels pretty special. 🐶💛

Meet Spade — Quiet, Sweet, and Full of Good Energy 🐾🖤

Spade is a sweet 45-pound boy who was rescued from a hoarding situation involving 45+ dogs and 3 pigs.

And honestly?
Considering where he came from, he’s doing really well.

Spade was incredibly easy to walk on leash. Calm, gentle, and overall just really pleasant to spend time with.

There were a few moments where his shyness showed through, but that felt completely understandable — we had literally just met. But even with those unsure moments, Spade stayed super positive throughout the walk.

And the really nice part?

He absolutely showed affection and accepted mine right back.

There’s something really special about dogs who still choose softness after difficult beginnings, and Spade definitely feels like one of them.

He also does well with other dogs, which could be really helpful for him as he continues building confidence and learning that the world can actually be safe.

Spade feels like the kind of dog who may not immediately explode with flashy personality… but instead slowly wins people over with:
✔ Sweetness
✔ Gentleness
✔ Quiet affection
✔ Happy, easygoing energy

He doesn’t seem difficult.
He seems thoughtful.

And after surviving such a chaotic environment, thoughtful is honestly pretty understandable.

Spade is ready for something calmer now:
✔ Patience
✔ Stability
✔ Kindness
✔ Loving home 🐶💛

Meet Peaches — Spots on the Ears, Softness in the Heart 🍑🐾

Peaches is a sweet 40-pound girl who came from a heartbreaking hoarding situation involving 45+ dogs and 3 pigs.

And despite all that chaos in her past?

She’s incredibly gentle.

My personal mission during our walk became making sure everyone could properly appreciate the adorable spotted ears she’s working with. Seriously — those little markings deserve attention.

Peaches was happy to head outside and calmly ignored all the loud, barking dogs while leaving the building. No drama, no barking back, no big reactions.

In the yard, she noticed another dog walking nearby and showed calm interest, but didn’t even feel the need to approach. Just quietly observed and kept doing her thing.

Treats?
Not interested.

But affection?

Absolutely yes.

Especially butt scratches.

And honestly, picture 4 says everything you need to know about how she feels about them. 😄

Peaches seems like the type of dog who doesn’t ask for much:
✔ A peaceful environment
✔ Gentle affection
✔ Kind people
✔ Maybe a few extra scratches here and there

After coming from such an overwhelming environment, seeing her quietly enjoy simple things felt really special.

She’s soft, calm, observant, and clearly ready for a life that finally revolves around comfort instead of survival.

And those spotted ears?
Yeah… they’re definitely part of the package. 🐶💛
