It’s been 7 years since the Pulse nightclub mass shooting. It is so sad that our country continues to fail us on this issue.

According to BBC news there have been more than 200 mass shootings this year. In the last three years, there have been more than 600 mass shootings, almost two a day on average.”

Images 1-9 where made on June 17th & 18th, 2016 in downtown Orlando just days after the mass shooting. Funerals of victims were taking place at surrounding churches during this time of protests. It was a feeling of sadness in the air that I will never forget.

We feel so lucky! Jennifer and Jerry met with Dr. Milbert Brown, the winner of our Taking Focus Grant. They were moved and inspired listening to him speak about his work and the future of his work that will be created through the grant funds awarded to him. He is a humble human being, grateful and everything we could have hoped for. Thank you Carl Juste!

This event is part of the series Defiance: Open Resistance; Bold Disobedience funded by Florida Humanities and organized the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab-FIU and Iris PhotoCollective. Taken as a whole, Defiance inspires a conversation about the meanings of democracy, protest and civic action in the post-George Floyd, post-Summer 2020 United States, beginning in Florida and continuing around the nation. What, this documentary asks, is the role of truth-telling and the responsibility of journalism in this contemporary moment.

This photo grant will go to a BIPOC photographer whose work focuses on racial injustice in the United States. As a documentary photographer you may be telling a personal story, you may be telling the story of your community. This is an opportunity to not only share your voice, but an opportunity to be a part of the change. The TF Giving Back Component is what helps make that possible. Never think that your work can not create change. Your work will always have an effect on someone.
