Remember This Case When You Vote — Judges Matter

The judge who ordered a church to stop worshiping before a trial — Sandra Upchurch — is up for reelection this year.

That should matter to every voter.

Courts are meant to protect constitutional rights, not suspend them first and sort things out later. Shutting down worship without an emergency, after it had been allowed for over a year, shows a lack of judgment — not judicial restraint.

And while serious criminal cases and families in crisis wait for court time, judicial resources were spent issuing an injunction so flawed it had to be paused on appeal.

Judicial elections aren’t ceremonial.
They’re about accountability.

Pay attention.
Remember this case.
And don’t sit out the vote — because judges affect everyone.

This Should Never Have Happened — Even Though the Church Can Meet Again

Good news first: the church that was barred from worship by a court injunction has now been granted a stay and is allowed to resume services.

But let’s be very clear — the damage was already done, and it never should have happened in the first place.

A church that had been meeting peacefully for well over a year, with city approval, was suddenly ordered by a court to stop assembling for worship before a trial had even occurred. No emergency. No safety issue. No new facts. Just an injunction.

That meant:
• A Sunday service was canceled
• The congregation was disrupted
• The church’s ability to function and sustain itself was jeopardized
• Time, money, and resources were wasted fighting an order that a higher court quickly had to pause

If an activity was allowed for over a year, logic — and basic equity — says it is not irreparably harmful to allow it to continue pending trial. Courts are supposed to use injunctions sparingly, not as a blunt instrument.

This wasn’t about public safety.
It wasn’t about urgency.
It was about overreach.

And while the appellate court corrected course by granting a stay, that does not undo the harm or the misuse of judicial power that got us here.

Courts exist to protect rights and resolve real disputes — not to shut down constitutional activity first and “sort it out later.”

That’s not justice. That’s disruption masquerading as procedure.
