Florida Leatherbacks Inc. A 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation devoted to researching and understanding the population of nesting leatherback sea turtles in Southeast Florida.

Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are an endangered species. They are the largest species of sea turtle, often reaching over 1,000 pounds. They are very vulnerable to fisheries bycatch, marine pollution and coastal development. Here in Florida, their nest counts and the number of individual nesting turtles are increasing. Each night from mid March until June 30th, our team patrols the

beach looking for nesting leatherback turtles. The team encounters leatherback turtles and tags, weighs and measures each animal. By uniquely identifying each individual, we hope to unravel some of the mysteries of this important nesting population. Our research team collaborates with scientists from institutions such as the National Marine Fisheries Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife, WIDECAST, the Canadian Sea Turtle Network, and many Universities. Collaborations and partnerships like these are key to truly understanding the global population of leatherback turtles. By collecting measurements, skin biopsies, and tag return records, our biologists have been able to publish some preliminary results about this important population. A summary of leatherback size can be found in the Herpetological Journal, results from several studies on organic pollutants are published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, and results of tracking studies are published in Chelonian Conservation and Biology. Our goal is to continue to collaborate with colleagues to make sure these important data are utilized to better understand the population and we strive to come up with new and exciting research studies each year. Long-term studies like these and daily nesting beach surveys have helped researchers around the World learn more about threatened and endangered sea turtles for decades.

It's always amazing to see a leatherback nesting during the day! Our team, along with Sea Turtle Adventures, Ecological Associates, Inc. and some lucky beachgoers, got to witness this beauty over the weekend 😍

Leatherbacks are truly living dinosaurs. These females can weigh over 1,000 lbs, feed almost exclusively on jellyfish, and can dive over 4,000'! We have seen hundreds but we're amazed every time!

Hatchlings are officially here! The first signs of hatchlings were documented on our survey area today 🥰🥰🥰 Leatherback nests take anywhere from 60-90 days to hatch depending on conditions. Each nest contains 70-100 eggs and these hatchlings will make their way to the ocean where they will spend many years before returning to the area as breeding adults 💜

Meet...a LEGEND! June Bug is one of our absolute favorites. Tagged 23 years ago by our two lead biologists, June Bug is a volunteer favorite 💜 She has been encountered approximately 30 times in 23 years by our team and . She has been tracked, she has been studied, and she has LIVED. She has returned with some battle scars over the years from interactions with boats, but still, she thrives. This weekend she graced us with her presence just after sunrise when a surveyor from found her. We love seeing some of our original girls continuing to return 💙 All work conducted under FWC MTP-208

Move over Justin Timberlake, it's Taylor's turn to announce the arrival of May! And that means the peak of leatherback nesting. The girls are showing off this year? Will they break the Florida record for a second year in a row? 🔥

Sadly, this is not an update we want to provide. Four leatherbacks have been recovered dead in our local waters this season, three just this past weekend. All four have been observed by our team. All four have tags, names and histories with our volunteers.

Our nearshore waters are used by thousands of nesting turtles each year. We must use safer boating practices to ensure sea turtle safety and survival.

Let's celebrate Earth Day with a major success story! 🌎🎉 In 2001, a sea turtle named Marcella was first identified on the beaches in Florida by our friends in Melbourne Beach. Last week, she returned to nest on Jupiter Island. Same turtle. Same Florida coast. A quarter-century apart.

Marcella has outlasted flip phones, entire coastal developments, and the careers of most of the volunteers who greeted her this season. She reminds us that conservation isn't measured in nesting seasons, it's measured in generations.

The choices our community makes for this beach today are choices Marcella's daughters (and their daughters) will inherit. Thank you to every volunteer who's walked this sand for 25 seasons to make sure she had a safe place to return to.

Here's to the next 25! 🎉
