As Strangulation Awareness Month comes to a close, keep the momentum going.
Strangulation is one of the strongest predictors of homicide in intimate partner violence cases and awareness can save lives.
Here are three ways we can all take action year-round to help prevent strangulation and support survivors:
1️⃣ Learn and Share the Facts
Strangulation is often misunderstood or minimized. Talk about what it really is: a potentially lethal act of violence. Share accurate information in your community, workplace, and with friends and family. Break the silence.
2️⃣ Support and Believe Survivors
If someone confides in you, listen without judgment. Encourage them to seek medical care—even if no marks are visible—and share the Institute's Survivor Resources: https://www.allianceforhope.org/training-institute-on-strangulation-prevention/survivor-resources
3️⃣ Advocate for Change
Support policies, trainings, and community programs that educate law enforcement, healthcare providers, and advocates about the signs, risks, and responses to strangulation. Change starts with awareness and grows through action.
Together, we can help ensure that survivors are seen, heard, and protected, not just in November, but every day. 💜
