Kristof Impact

Kristof Impact Supporting little-known organizations working to make the world a better place.

Since 2009, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and former New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has written an annual “holiday gift guide” column to bridge a philanthropic gap: readers who wanted to help but didn’t know how, and heroic individuals and organizations who desperately needed resources but were off donors’ radar. The column has helped raise the profiles of organizations that work on th

e very issues Kristof covers in his journalism—health, education, human rights and women’s rights, both domestically and abroad.

“What if you could save someone in West Africa from developing river blindness, caused by a parasite that can destroy the optic nerve, for 75 cents? Or keep a child from dying of hunger in Sudan’s civil war and famine for $14 a week? Or help a first grader here in the United States get glasses to finally see the board and read a book, for $150? That is what you can accomplish by supporting the nonprofits I feature in my holiday giving guide this year.”

$75 to Helen Keller Intl provides medication to protect 100 people across Africa from blinding and disabling infectious disease.

Neglected tropical diseases affect over 1 billion people – causing blindness, disability, and lost opportunities. But they’re preventable. Helen Keller Intl partners with governments and communities across Africa to deliver lifesaving medicine through mass drug administration campaigns with a network of 170,000+ trained community health workers.

Because of their work, 110 million people across six countries are no longer at risk of blindness or disability from neglected tropical diseases.

$11 helps trusted local volunteers deliver lifesaving aid to someone enduring war and famine through Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition.

While international aid often struggles to reach Sudan, a network of 26,000+ grassroots volunteers–known as Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs)–are saving lives every day. Donations to Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition goes directly to these responders, who organize communal kitchens, arrange evacuations, provide shelter and education, and distribute medicines.

Already, they’ve helped more than 3 million people.

I have the best readers! Just two weeks after publishing my holiday giving guide in The New York Times Opinion Section, we've raised an astonishing $20 million for three extraordinary, evidence-based nonprofits. One eases famine in Sudan, one distributes donated medicines in Africa and one gets glasses to kids in early grades in the US who need them, so that they can study, read and thrive. All great organizations, and I'm awed by the readers response.

If you're looking for a good nonprofit to support this holiday season, or if you're looking to make a gift to your Aunt Mabel other than a scarf, then check out my giving guide https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/22/opinion/holiday-gift-guide.html . Or just go direct to the donation site: https://kristofimpact.org/ And thanks again to all who have donated. We're doing some good together this holiday season.

This , your support for the honorees is more critical than ever. With federal funding cuts threatening lifesaving programs, private donations are keeping these efforts alive.

Whether it’s fighting preventable blindness and disability, powering local humanitarian responders in Sudan, or giving low-income students the glasses they need to succeed, your donation can make the world a better place.

Every dollar you give today will unlock an unprecedented match and multiply your impact: kristofimpact.org

One of my most important and anticipated columns each year is my holiday giving guide. Nonprofits lobby me all year to be included -- and it's out today. I recommend three outstanding charities doing heroic work abroad and at home.

These may feel like grim times. Perhaps you feel powerless, even paralyzed. But each of us has almost miraculous powers to help others.

What if you could save someone in West Africa from developing river blindness, caused by a parasite that can destroy the optic nerve, for 75 cents? Or keep a child from dying of hunger in Sudan’s civil war and famine for $14 a week? Or help a first grader here in the US get glasses to finally see the board, for $150? That is what you can accomplish by supporting these nonprofits.

And because of matches by Bloomberg Philanthropies and others, this year each $1 you donate means $4 reaching the nonprofit you choose.

So join in: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/22/opinion/holiday-gift-guide.html The column is outside the paywall, so please share it around. Let's do some good together!
