Roger Sorben from Sorben Honey came out to collect the honey from the Long Lake hives. It was a good year for honey with approximately 150,000 bees in three hives, producing between 250 and 300 pounds of honey. We can attest that the honey and honey comb are delicious. Roger is off to extract the honey, which will be available in the Canteen in the next few weeks. Thanks to Roger - one of the sweetest guys we know.

PHENOLOGY FRIDAY
Naturalist Julia Kuhns and campers conducted a Bumblebee Survey late last week. 106 bees were documented during a 45-minute search of the pollinator field behind the archery range. There were many male Brown Belted Bumblebees identified. The males of many bumblebee species have very large eyes. This is the case with Brown Belted Bumblebees. During our spring survey, we did not document any Brown Belted Bumblebees. Instead, most of the bumblebees we recorded in the spring were females which are easily identified because they have pollen baskets on their legs. Another bumblebee note of interest is that the queens that will be making their nests next year are starting to emerge. Julia will be adding the newly collected data to the over 5,500 bees that have already been documented this year through the Mideast Bumblebee Atlas!

During the bumblebee survey, we also saw a Hummingbird Clearwing. At a distance, this moth is easily confused for a hummingbird based both on appearance and behavior. We also spotted a Black and Yellow Garden Spider. These large, beautiful and harmless spiders are shy, tending to stay close to their webs, eating nuisance bugs. A friendly deer stopped by to say hello. It looked healthy and well fed. The water level on Long Lake is down 4.6" since ice out on April 14. Lastly, Outdoor Explorers campers and Wrestling Campers caught fish on Long Lake, including a bunch of perch, a few sunfish, a good-sized crappie and a northern pike. This is further proof that the fish population is bouncing back nicely after bad winterkills in 2023 and 2024. It's a great time to alive. Get outside and explore nature. If you can, take a kid with you!
