Palestine Main Street

Palestine Main Street Accredited program, supporting preservation based economic development of downtown Palestine, TX.

Soon after independent Texas joined the United States, Anderson County was established with the town of Palestine as the county seat in 1846. The original center of commerce for the town developed around the Anderson County Courthouse square with an industrial area just to the West along Wells Creek. In 1872, a new commercial area sprung up and grew rapidly about a half mile away from the courthou

se, to service the needs of the new railroad. The original industrial area and courthouse square were locally referred to as "Old Town", while the new area became known as "New Town". Today, the Main Street District stretches about one mile and includes both the Old Town and New Town areas. With time, the areas have further segmented so now there are 4 "neighborhoods" in the District all with distinct vibes and specialties. Now, the Courthouse Square is mainly comprised of service businesses on the three sides, and there is original building stock with exciting potential on the East side. The current "Old Town" area refers to the original industrial zone along Wells Creek and is a center of nightlife and foodie destinations. What was the "New Town" area is now know as the Central Business District with many turn of the 19th century buildings still in use and where many of our city services, banking, and plenty of shopping and restaurants keep visitors and residents busy. The area to the West of the Central Business District is less structurally dense, has green space and parks, and it is where the Palestine Farmer's Market, Railroad Heritage Center, and Visitor Information Centers are located.
