ONE in four school-going children in Ireland has risk factors for heart disease, according to new research.

The worrying picture emerged as GAA stars lined out to set a fitness challenge for teenagers in a bid to get more youngsters to see the benefits of exercise.

Bryan Cullen, All-Ireland winning captain of the Dublin senior football team and Paul Flynn, current GAA football All-Star and Meath senior football captain, believe their devotion to fitness as children has contributed to their playing skills today.

Bryan said: “Sport and fitness has always been part of my life, but I wouldn’t be where I am today unless I had exercised as a child. For me, being active when I was younger contributed enormously to my ability to play Gaelic football at intercounty level today. I am incredibly grateful to the coaches and teachers who placed an emphasis on physical fitness.”

They referred to research findings in the Children’s Sport Participation and Physical Activity Study, showing a quarter of school- going children have poor aerobic fitness levels, weight problems or even high blood pressure.

As part of a drive to get first and second year pupils to improve their fitness they are urging schools to take part in the Aviva Schools’ Fitness Challenge, an initiative developed by Dublin City University in conjunction with the Wellness Economic Initiative Alliance.

Secondary schools interested in participating in the national challenge are being encouraged to register online at www.avivahealth.ie/fitnesschallenge by Friday January 18 to receive a registration pack with the fitness test audio on CD, and step-by-step guidelines of how to complete the programme successfully.

Speaking at the launch,Kevin Reilly, PE Teacher at Colaiste Na Hinse, Meath VEC, says, “In my view physical education is critically important to the future health of every child, and should be prioritised and viewed as a subject as important as any academic subject like Maths and Science. “

Dear Parents,

First, we wanted to thank all the students who attended the event on Saturday. This wouldn't have happened without your trust on us to send your kids to this event. We hope that the students found this event useful and provided them enough information to go back and think about their career path.

We have received several positive feedback during the event as well as we are continuing to get feedback on this event and we feel proud of what we delivered to the community. The speakers were excited to give back to the community as a service through our non profit organization.

Overall we had a successful event with over 35 registered students and 18 guest speakers and over 10 volunteers who took their time from their research/work/study and helped this event. The students were amazing and well behaved throughout the event and showed their enthusiasm in learning throughout the event. It is also important for the parents to know that the kids were excited and presented their career plan in-front of all the students and we found out that they were so motivated to take up the challenge in the medicine field. We are confident that the students time spent with us enabled them to think about their medicine career path through this event.

This event wouldn't have made possible without the volunteers and we had several parents, friends and families volunteered and we wanted to thank them all who offered their help.

We also planned for the next event and we put some careful thoughts on the agenda on how to take this one session into more activity oriented as well as more hands-on experience to develop deeper skills to make a better candidate for the medical school admission. This will be conducted in 2 sessions and we have outlined the agenda and the date. We are also considering two dates for the flexibility to the juniors/seniors end of the school year conflict. However, we have confirmed the first event date April 20th (Session 1) and the alternative session schedule will be determined soon. All the attendees who attended this event would be given first priority for this limited seated event.

In addition, if you and your kids benefited from this event, we request you to spread it to your family and friends who can benefit from our future events. This would be your generous help to this organization and volunteers that are working hard to put more events like this in future.

The information and agenda link is provided below and we will be sending more details about this session in our next follow-up e-mails.

Again, we hope you enjoyed the event and we are looking for continuous support from you all.

Sincerely,
Board Members of Chicago Children's Heart Association
