Happy Earth Day! Thanks to Hilda for organizing a local Palacios cleanup for the Coast-wide Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Program's spring cleanup. Several of the Palacios Prairie Wetlands board members participated this morning, including Robert, Natalie, Cathy, Erwin, and Kayla.

Volunteers recorded what kinds of trash they found using the Ocean Conservancy's mobile app Cleanswell. Kayla, Cathy, and Natalie's small group picked up 729 pieces of trash without even walking a mile! Most of those items were pieces of plastic and styrofoam. We also found 80 plastic bottles and 64 aluminum cans. Both of these items can be recycled at the Palacios Recycle Center. The next time you finish a drink, please consider recycling the bottle/can so it doesn't end up in the bay.

It's dewberry season! What is your favorite use for dewberries? This native plant growing all over the Palacios Prairie Wetlands is also used by native bees and other wildlife. The white flowers were pretty earlier this spring and now the berries are in full swing. The Lady Bird Johnson Center Plant Database has more info: https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=RUTR
