A little Comets Basketball History ๐๐
ฟ๏ธ๐๐
PAINTSVILLE COMETS 1922 UNDEFEATED. We have discussed an early team or two of girls basketball at Paintsville. But we have never gone back to what may have been their first season of 1921-22. That team shows to have been coached for that one season by John Sterling Jackson. The record, according to the Ky High School Basketball Encyclopedia shows they were undefeated that season! But we canโt jump, clap and whistle at their being undefeated. The Encyclopedia counts post season wins and losses in with the regular season totals. So letโs look at that final record. As Gomer Pyle would exclaim โ Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!โ The Comets ( the girls team nickname in those days) played but two games. Both were in the 16th District tournament. Both were wins. There were but three teams in that District at the time and two were in Pikeville. Pikeville High School and Pikeville College Academy and Paintsville made up the entirety of the teams in that 16th District Tournament. There were no Regional Tournaments in those early days. Winners of the Districts went straight to the State Tournament. Entering the tourney Pikeville was 8-7. It was their seventh season of girls play. Pikeville College Academy was 10-4. It was their third season of play. Paintsville entered not having ever played a game that season or any before that season. Paintsville defeated Pikeville College Academy 12-4. They then played Pikeville High for the championship and defeated them 9-6, giving them two wins in their first ever year. But they could not advance to the State Tournament as the Encyclopedia states โ due to player illnessโ. But an undefeated year in its first ever season was at least something they could hang their hats on.
That puts them in the same boat, though on a different scale, with the 1936 Benham boys basketball team who could not play in the tourney due to a meningitis outbreak after going undefeated and the boys of Ashland in 2020 as the Sweet 16 was not played due to Covid. All went undefeated. Sadly, none of the three played in the State Tournament. But we can, and probably will always say โWhat ifโฆ?โ
