We opened with a Mele oli kipa, stating our intentions of aloha as visitors to the sacred ‘āina and Oli E Ho mai, humbly requesting guidance from our Kūpuna. We also did a mini hula demonstration, recognizing our Kūpuna and their ‘Ike.

Kona shared about our program, what we do and gave the audience a look into our first Hawai’i Zero Waste Youth convergence back in October.

Roxie shared the recent diversion numbers, birth of the Zero Waste Youth alliance, and the upcoming Kaua’i youth convergence & the 2027 National Zero Waste Convergence.

The energy of cannot be replicated!

Check out some of our Zero Waste Youth Advocates at the Kaiāulu hub showcasing a mini diversion station, cardboard pots and outreach handouts during the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Our goal was to spread awareness about Bill 83, which will be implemented in December this year!

All food establishments, food vendors & county facility users will need to be in compliance with using BPI certified & compostable products to serve and package food. We know the Merrie Monarch festival is a huge opportunity for businesses and might already be preparing for next year!

Mahalo again to the Kaiāulu hub for holding space for our ‘ōpio!

We were excited to have Kallie as a guest speaker come to visit our class

She had so much knowledge to share with our haumāna on the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Restoration Project and walked us thru what a day in the field looks like, the different native and indigenous plants/seeds that are collected to ensure our forests have a sturdy foundation to flourish.

Kallie showed us how she and her team harvests seeds efficiently and we got to try it out! We had so much fun!

Protecting our wildlife, our forests and oceans is everyone’s Kūleana! Mahalo nui Kallie and HWF

On the last day of the Bioneers Conference our Senior Students Kona & Chazlyn along with our friends led an interactive conversation sessions titled, YOUTH VS. PLASTIC.

In this session ‘ōpio shared their proven strategies to advance policies, minimize plastic use and plastic pollution. Working together they facilitated an interactive portion which opened space for participants to engage in meaningful conversations and mock the process of presenting policies to their State / County leaders.

Our Hawai’i youth leaders came to kako’o too! .ffa

The description of the session ⬇️ below

“When UN leaders failed to pass a meaningful global plastics treaty, young organizers from across Hawaiʻi and Louisiana’s Cancer Alley came together to confront plastic pollution from both ends of the pipeline, i.e.—where it’s produced, and where it washes ashore. In this skill-building interactive, participants in the Bioneers Native Youth Ambassador Program from communities severely harmed by the plastic cycle will share their proven strategies to modify personal behavior, advocate for sustainable plastic policies, build zero-waste systems, and advance efforts to phase out single-use plastics. This youth-led interactive is for anyone living on the frontlines of endemic pollution or climate catastrophe—and for anyone who wants to learn from and support them. With: Lael Kylin Judson from Rural Roots Louisiana and Kona Smith and Chazlyn Mukini from Recycle Hawai’i.”

While some of our Team Members were at Bioneers, our Zero Waste Youth Advocate, Jessica, held it down in Na’alehu at the Prince Kūhiō Ho’olaule’a.

This festival honors the “People’s Prince”, Prince Jonah Kūhiō a benevolent Ali’i whose na’au always remained in service to Kanaka.

Mahalo for stopping by the booth! Eō Kalaniana’ole!
