Our cafeteria waste diversion program has been in operation for 2 years. This 2026-2027 school year will be the beginning of Year 3!

Where does cafeteria waste really go? Our waste diversion stations at Ka’u High and Pahala Elementary school help reduce waste and keep more out of our landfills through waste separation. Through our actions, we are creating a big change. Join us, think before throwing things away and help make the world more sustainable!

With change comes growth 🌱

As we enter the third year of the REO program we’re excited to share this new chapter with you.

Aloha Mai, we are now Mālama ‘Āina ‘Ōpio. Malama Aina Opio

We recognized that our program does more than just compost and a new name, logo and color palette was needed to reflect that. With the help of Hunter at Purple Maiʻa Foundation she was able to take this vision and bring it to life.

A few Highligts from this past weekends

Mālama ‘Āina ‘Ōpio participated as an informational booth to spread awareness about our programs initiatives and the upcoming implementation of Bill 83. Bill 83 will ban single use plastics and have food establishments and county facility users transition to compostable & BPI certified products.

Thank you Ka’ū Coffee Festival for having us this year.

We offer many alternatives to plastics for our local farmers including cardboard pots, mulch and w**d mats. If you’re a local farmer looking for plastic alternatives we’d love to connect with you!

After 2 years of our program operations we’ve officially diverted over 30,000 lbs of food waste from our school cafeteria alone. Keep in mind our student body is a little over 500 and serves K-12.

All food waste gets split between our local pig farmer and our in-vessel composter our girl, Ho’ohuli.

Imagine for schools who hold a larger capacity of students and staff?

Day 2 of our Kaua’i Convergence. He Moku He Wa’a , He W’a He Moku!

We took the day to focus on ‘Ike pilina, building meaningful connections with our peers & Kumu. In their teams, haumāna worked together in a photo scavenger hunt. Team Makani taking 1st place.

After the scavenger teams were tasked with creating a wa’a out of reusable, compostable and organic materials such as Niu, raffia and cardboard.

Getting to know Anahola / Anehola through ‘āina with Anakē Lori and Anakala Kapule was one of the highlights of the convergence.

Finished the day with a meal provided by Aunty Kelly, Kruze and Kilohana ._808 of .ffa with a spread of huli chicken, fried i’a and teriyaki style venison. Showing us true ‘āina to table.

Summer has begun and we’re starting off strong with hosting & attending the Zero Waste Youth Planning Convergence.

Youth leaders from across the Pae ‘āina came together over the week to strengthen the formed alliance and plan the 2027 National Zero Waste Convergence.

Here’s a look into our travel day. Took an early morning flight direct to Kaua’i and finished the day with some team building activities.

Youth Voices for a Zero Waste Hawaiʻi

Join us for an ʻōpio-led presentation by the Hawaiʻi Zero Waste Youth Alliance. Hawaiʻi youth will share the impactful work their program is doing across the pae ʻāina and spark conversation on how our communities can support the growing zero waste movement.

Our Zero Waste Youth Advocates Kona & Roxie were invited to present at the Zero Waste Forum by

We opened with a Mele oli kipa, stating our intentions of aloha as visitors to the sacred ‘āina and Oli E Ho mai, humbly requesting guidance from our Kūpuna. We also did a mini hula demonstration, recognizing our Kūpuna and their ‘Ike.

Kona shared about our program, what we do and gave the audience a look into our first Hawai’i Zero Waste Youth convergence back in October.

Roxie shared the recent diversion numbers, birth of the Zero Waste Youth alliance, and the upcoming Kaua’i youth convergence & the 2027 National Zero Waste Convergence.
