San Juan Basin Area Agency on Aging

San Juan Basin Area Agency on Aging San Juan Basin AAA The OAA is based on the principle that older adults are entitled to spend their retirement years in good health, independence and dignity.

The Older American's Act (OAA) of 1965 was enacted to provide a range of support services to allow older persons to live independently, even if they are not fully able to care for themselves. To put this ideal into action, the OAA created a network of Area Agenciies on Aging and Native American aging programs in communiites across the United States. In Colorado, there is a network of 16-Area Agenc

ies on Aging (AAA), that provides services with the goal of enriching lives of older Coloradans and helping them maintain independent lifestyles. Our agency receives valuable guidance from members of our state and local community, including the Region 9 - 15 member Board of Directors and the Regional Advisory Council on Aging (RACOA). Representatives come from each county in a 5-county area region. Our major funding sources come from the Administration on Aging (AoA) and the State Unit on Aging (SUA), as well as United Way of Southwest Colorado. We are also grateful to have had support from the City of Cortez, Town of Ignacio and San Juan County for helping us meet the minimum local cash match requirements for the AoA grant we receive every year. We also receive support from Foundations and local grantors. In addition, we have a committed group of volunteers throughout the region who help make our services possible and allow us to reach more isolated, home-bound senior citizens by delivering them home delivered meals.

A lot of great things are growing at the Senior Center grow domes! Each site is now in production (Gabby, our grower in Silverton, just planted her first beds that are surviving the cold nights). The growers at each dome are working hand in hand with kitchen teams, and community volunteers to effectively get the bounty of fresh produce onto the plates of older adults across the region. All are welcome to come visit, learn and help out!
