A well earned letter of commendation read at tonights City Council meeting for our Roy Earnest and his 25 years of organizing the Kahuna Kupuna Surf Contest. The contest, a fundraiser for PEF, is the only surf contest known to celebrate surfers over 40 Years of age. Congratulations Roy. 🏄‍♂️

For many years, Pacifica's Environmental Family has been sharing educational programs about the climate crisis, sea level rise, and the need for us to respect the natural envirornment and keep the public safe while providing access to the amazing coast.

The City of Pacifica's Local Coatal Land Use Plan (LCLUP), will be hard by the California Coastal Commission, this Thursday, May 8. By and large it's a good plan with additions recognizing the climate crisis and how we need to adapt to the changing environment we are now in.

Unfortunately it includes devasting policies that can continue and expand hard armoring along the Pacifica coastline -- AND open up all of California's coast to the same.

"Special Shoreline Resiliency Areas" (SSRAs_ are NOT about resiliency -- they perpetuate the loss of beaches and public acces through hard armoring (seawalls, rip rap, etc.) that already cover over a third of Pacifica's shoreline. AND, in a city where we've already lost over a dozen houses and three apartment buildings to erosion and accelerated impact due to stronger and more ferocious storms and wave action, SSRAs would allow for INTENSIFIED development in these already impacted coastal hazard areas.

Sign onto Surfrider's action campaign to say NO to the archaic idea of walls that keep us from the beaches and ocean that are here for all of us.

PEF, through Board Member and Pacifica Shrorebird Alliance volunteer Margaret Goodale, informed and engaged with our elders at the congregate lunch today at the Pacifica Community Center about our amazing little Western Snowy Plovers in celebration of Earth Day. (Short video from the annual winter bird count. Yes those are Western Snowy Plovers scampering across the sand to their protected area, at Pacifica State Beach, Linda Mar, 1/30/24.)

Happy Earth Day. A great day to speak out for the Coastal Act, California's landmark legislation to protect the coast for everyone. Let's not let developers carve out the coast for their profit above the right of all to enjoy the amazing and irreplaceable coastal habitat.

Don't give away the coast to developers! Sign and add your name to the petition. Tell your State Senate and Assembly members to Vote NO on SB 951.
