We are still looking for citizen board members from St. Louis and Franklin Counties, due to end of term resignations.

If you are interested, Please DM MRRA Chair Jo Schaper. Our meetings are quarterly, usually on Thursday afternoons from 3-5 p.m. We are having a meeting October 10. We do ask that people be interested in the Meramec between Sullivan and the confluence at Flamm City. Expertise in river issues is appreciated, but not necessary.

If you are interested in checking this out with the intent to serve, a term is two years. DM me and I will tell you where the meeting will be.

When the MRRA was formed in 1975, twelve citizen positions were established for the Association: 3 each from Franklin, Jefferson and St. Louis counties, and 3 "at large" from the Meramec Valley watershed below Sullivan Missouri.

We currently have 2 citizen openings (one each) for Jefferson and St. Louis Counties. Requirements are:

1) To be able to faithfully attend 4 meetings a year, usually between 3 and 5 pm on Thursday afternoons, somewhere in the watershed;

2) An interest and/or expertise in the management of the lower river. Our focus is on water quality, appropriate use of the floodplain, regional river trails and communications betweeen federal, state, local government and environmental NGOs on projects relating to the Meramec and its lower tributaries of the Bourbeuse and Big Rivers. If you have ideas, and want to get the informal ear of any of these people, this is a great place to do it. If you float the lower Meramec from Stanton to Arnold, or work on Operation Clean Stream, or own streambank, we want you! You do not have to be a professional--just enthusiastic about intelligent treament of this section of the river! Especially interested in people along Big River, the Meramec in Valley Park or Fenton or extreme south St. Louis County.

Terms of citizen members are for 3 years.

Interested? DM Chair Jo Schaper here, or send an email to [email protected]. Include contact info, and a brief statement of your background, and why you want to be on the board by August 31.

Thank you!

With the end of May, there will be lots of people out on the Meramec River this summer--camping, fishing, boating, floating, swimming, picnicking, going to the many state parks, river accesses, Maramec Spring Park, and private attractions and beaches.

Be safe out there! If you are on the water, wear a lifejacket --state required for children age 7 and under. Wade out and check the river bottom, don't dive, jump off high bluffs or drink too much. The river is patrolled by a number of law enforcement agencies. Watch out for each other, and heed the few No Swimming signs out there. If there is a No Swimming sign, it is almost certain someone drowned there.

Want to help the river? The 4th Saturday in August is Operation Clean Stream--a river cleanup that has been going on for almost 70 years. See https://openspacestl.org to volunteer. Pick up any trash you find, and pack out what you take with you!

Thanks to all the new people liking us. If you are interested in becoming more involved with the MRRA, drop a DM to Jo Schaper here or [email protected].
