Another great Pacific Grove Rotary Club luncheon! We welcomed several guests, celebrated Cynthia Garfield receiving her Paul Harris Fellow recognition, shared Happy Dollars and auction items, and enjoyed the fellowship that makes our weekly meetings special. Members were also reminded about the upcoming I-HELP dinner on October 22 and opportunities to help at the club check-in desk.

Our featured speaker was Dr. Mike McDermott, President and CEO of Montage Health, who gave an engaging look at the state of local healthcare and the opportunities and challenges facing Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He highlighted advances in stroke care, structural heart care, robotic surgery, and youth behavioral health through Ohana, while also explaining the financial pressures hospitals are navigating. Dr. McDermott made a complex subject easy to understand and gave us a fascinating inside perspective on one of our community’s most important institutions.

It was another full and lively meeting for the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove! Members celebrated the continued success of I-HELP and thanked everyone who volunteered for the recent dinner, while also hearing updates about the return of the PGHS Interact Club, upcoming visits from our Camp Royal students, and plans for this year’s community shredding event. We were especially happy to welcome back Pam Norton, the first female member of our club, who has returned to the area and plans to rejoin Rotary. As always, Happy Dollars brought plenty of good news, stories, and fellowship to the meeting.

Our speaker, Dr. Lindley Zerbe, took us on an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mount Everest. Starting with little previous mountaineering experience, he shared how years of training prepared him for an expedition that ultimately lasted about three months. His photos and stories gave us a remarkable look at acclimatizing to extreme altitude, repeatedly climbing higher before descending to sleep, enduring unpredictable weather and exhausting conditions, and finally reaching the top of the world. It was another great reminder of one of the best things about Rotary—you never know what fascinating experience you may get to hear about firsthand at a Tuesday meeting!
