Our featured speaker, Dr. Baldo Marinovic will be giving his talk, “Krill: The Crustacean Currency of the Ocean Economy.”

Dr. Marinovic has been a lecturer and research biologist with the Institute of Marine Sciences at University of California, Santa Cruz for thirty years. His focus is on the dynamics of the krill population and the ocean food web within the California Current Ecosystem. Marinovic’s research has led to a better understanding of what makes Monterey Bay such a productive and biologically rich ecosystem.

Join Us Tonight for an Evening of Blue Whales!

The Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Cetacean Society invites you to our next in-person meeting this Thursday, May 28 at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove.

Our featured speaker, Dr. John Ryan, Senior Research Specialist at MBARI, will present: "Tracking Blue Whales Through Sound".

Dr. Ryan is a biological oceanographer who studies the ocean soundscape and uses acoustic monitoring to track whale calls with hydrophones. His research helps uncover how whales communicate, forage, and respond to environmental stressors.

Some may know him as the scientist who wheels around a giant subwoofer to let audiences hear, and feel, the calls of blue whales, the loudest animals on Earth.

Did you know?

Dr. Burney Le Boeuf earned his PhD at UC Berkeley in 1966 and shifted from lab research on rodents and quail to decades of groundbreaking studies on elephant seals and other marine mammals in the wild.

He has studied social and reproductive behavior, colony development, diving, foraging, and population dynamics, and continues to publish and update his classic work, The Natural History of Año Nuevo.
