Possessed Possessions
By Sharon Renae, Spiritual Counselor

Many people might say, “I don’t believe in ghosts,” or “I’ve never seen a ghost.” But just maybe you have...

When I was a small child I would see “ghosts” all the time, only I didn’t know they were ghost, until my cousin informed me I was hanging out with “dead” people! Yikes, I ran screaming from my dead playmates, because dead meant not alive!

In my experience ghosts, or hauntings can be acknowledged in many different ways. As an echo (memory) of something etched into a specific time, perhaps someone continuing to “live” where they died and for whatever reason they did not cross over.

The story I am going to share is based on what I call “possessed possessions.” These are material “things” that contain an echo, or a very possessive energy. I usually come across these at antique stores, estate sales and flea markets.

While living in Sierra Vista, Arizona, I used to love to go to Bisbee and go antique shopping. Bisbee was considered to be one of the biggest cities in the west during its heyday. Now it is only a small town with a lot of memories. One Saturday we were in my favorite shop, when I suddenly stopped, because I heard someone screaming and crying. I asked my husband if he heard it and he said “No, but I feel real dizzy.” (My husband gets dizzy when there are “ghostly” energies around.)

I was drawn to an antique bedroom suite. There was screaming all around it, I visually saw images of a woman being beat up and hair being pulled by a man. Upset by the feeling we left the store. We went into another store and as I was walking to look at a plate and long dark haired apparition appeared and pushed me out of the way. She was definitely seeing after her “things” and didn’t want me around! We left, this time going home!

The next week I was getting my nails done and talking with my nail-tech about the incidents. Another customer over-heard me talking about the furniture, and turned a pale shade of green. She had asked if I had seen it a particular store and described the furniture to me in detail. Yep, that was it.

She said they had bought it on Sunday for her 9-year-old daughter. They had brought it home and put it in the garage because they had plans to refinish it. That night as her husband was sitting alone watching television, he heard a women screaming as if she were in fear. He checked his wife and daughter, they were sound asleep and he went outside to see if it were neighbors. He didn’t see or hear anything. Puzzled he sat back down.

It happened again. Again he found nothing. He sat down, turned off the television, since he wasn’t sure if it might be the cable messing up. He heard it again, and followed the sound. It was coming from the garage!

The next morning they returned the furniture. Since it was a consignment shop they would have to sell it, since all sells were final. He said he didn’t care, but wanted to put an “it’s haunted” tag on it, because he didn’t want someone putting it in their child’s room like they had planned.

When the owner went into the back a salesperson came up to them and said, “You are the third couple to bring this back this month!

Low-Tech Ghost Hunting Tools and Techniques
You don't need a FLIR to spot a spirit
By Rick Loe

Paranormal investigation, especially ghost hunting, has seen many advances in the last few years. New shows on TV, new books, improvements in tools and technology have all helped in the advancement of discovering the other side. These are all wonderful things, but it's important to remember you don't have to use the latest equipment to conduct your own paranormal investigation.

Listed are some of the low-tech tools and techniques that you may already have in your house, and will do nicely in your investigation.

Powder on a cookie sheet: Take an ordinary cookie sheet, large pan, or even a heavy, sturdy blanket and place it in the area where the paranormal activity is taking place. Sprinkle baby powder or flour on the sheet or blanket and leave the area. Return and check for any marks or changes to the powder.

Crunch security alarm: Similar to the powder on a cookie sheet, this uses a pan of chips or other crunchy material and can alarm you of activity. Place the pan in the area of the paranormal activity and listen for the crunching. Of course, if you get bored, you'll always have a snack available.

Compass: A compass can be used to detect electromagnetic activity, similar to the way an EMF detector operates. Hold the compass normally as you would when trying to get your bearings. When a spirit passes by, the theory is that the compass will spin or point in a direction other than North.

Bell on a string: Another excellent low-tech tool, this will work if your paranormal activity includes entities which tend to move things or are a bit more solid than a mist. Stretch the string across the suspected paranormal area and tie one end to a stable object (like a chair or table leg.) The other end should wrap around the other end of a stable object with the bell hanging free. The concept is that anything that moves against or wiggles the string would cause the bell to sound.

Mirror: Some believe that looking into a mirror allows the viewer to see into an alternate universe or to see things that our naked eyes are unable to see. Situate a small mirror so that it's reflection allows you to see the paranormal area.

Turkey thermometer: It's not just for Thanksgiving! Use your digital meat thermometer to detect cool spots, drafts, and other-worldly activity.

Disposable camera: I've been on many investigations where the investigator with the inexpensive digital camera got the best shots. Don't discount their ability to capture descent images of paranormal activity.

Incense or Sage: The smoke from incense and sage is a great way to find drafts in an enclosed area. Of course, this may ruin your ability to smell a disembodied scent, but it works great if you're unsure of where that breeze is coming from.

Digital laser level: Many people have a laser level in the tool box or shed. Use it to ensure locations are level, but they can also be a great way to lightly highlight an area for any movement.

Tape recorder: You may have an older cassette recorder hidden away in the attic or laying in a drawer. Cassette tape recorders have a tendency to make more mechanical sounds than they're cousin the digital voice recorder, but they'll do the trick when you're doing an EVP session.

Dowsing rods and pendulums: Use these to detect spirit activity similar to an EMF detector. There are many different thoughts on the correct way to use these, so we would recommend doing internet research to find a technique you would like or follow package directions.

Wind chimes: Another great way to detect drafts or spirit movement. Try placing it in an area that doesn’t have a draft for spirit detection. You can find that by lighting an incense to see if it leads to a previously unknown area where drafts are occurring. If the smoke seems to lead up in a consistent direction and thickens it is less likely to be affected by drafts.

Pets: It's believed that pets, such as cats and dogs, have the ability to see into another realm. Pay attention to your pet and take notes. Investigate areas that the pet seems to be focused on.

Observation: The best and simplest tool and technique is your own body. Use your personal senses such as sight, sound, smell, and even your feelings to detect paranormal activity.

As you can see, there are many different techniques available for the beginner investigator which don't require any complicated or expensive tools.

FAQ's
Answers to frequently asked questions we receive.
**************************************
QUESTION~What software do you use to review your EVPs?

ANSWER~We use Wavepad by NCH Software. This software is great, free, and does the job. They also offer a professional version of Wavepad which you can purchase from their website.

QUESTION~Where are some places in Pensacola that I can do my own paranormal investigating?

ANSWER~There are several good places to do your own research. Prior to investigating a private location, it's important to receive permission from the property owner first. If you're investigating a cemetery or other old historical location, please be gentle with the environment - it's important that we keep these important sites intact and free from any mischief or vandalism.

Seville Quarter is a good starting location. Psychics have reported entities and other paranormal happenings in the courtyard, ladies restroom, and outside the front area of the buildings.
Paranormal groups have also had experiences at the Pensacola Victorian Bed and Breakfast including shadows, voices as well as objects moving. Psychics have also seen spirit activity.
The Pensacola Crowne Plaza Hotel in the old L&N Depot, TT Wentworth Museum and the Museum of Industry are excellent locations to do a little research. A part of the Historic Pensacola Village, the museums are open during the day. You may want to be discreet during your investigation of these areas as not everyone is open to the possibility of "Ghost After Death."

QUESTION~What kind of equipment do you use during your investigations?

ANSWER~Well right now, since we are still limited on funds, our equipment is limited. Right now we only have a K2 meter, EMF detector with temp, motion sensor, digital voice recorder, digital camera, camcorders, and of course, flashlights.

Other paranormal groups that has been into it longer, has other equipment which includes IR cameras, Digital Video Recorders, parabolic microphones, Radiation Sensors, temperature gauges, hand-held Van De Graaff generators, & spirit boxes.

QUESTION~I know of a location that might be haunted in Santa Rosa or Escambia County. Can I ask you about it?

ANSWER~Defintely. We keep a database of different locations that have been reported haunted. If you have any information that might help others, please feel free to sent it to us. You can text me the info at 850/324-9965 or send it to our email: [email protected]

QUESTION~How much do you charge to conduct an investigation at my house or business?

ANSWER~We DO NOT charge for our investigations. We conduct our investigations as a service to the community and to futher the understanding of the paranormal. However, donations are accepted and will go to the purchase of new equipment and/or gas to go back and forth to investigations. If we have to travel over 50 miles one way, we ask that you pay traveling expenses of $1 per mile per vehicle each mile over the first 50 miles.

QUESTION~Why do you have an age restriction on your membership?

ANSWER~It's important to show respect and honor to those who have passed, and sometimes the only way to understand that is with age. That is why you MUST be 18 to join.

QUESTION~My friends and I had a party the other night, and my boyfriend/girlfriend dragged out the Ouija Board. Things have been creepy since then and I was wondering if there is anything we can do to fix it?

ANSWER~The first step is not to use the Ouija Board unless you know what you're doing. Parties usually involve drinking and possibly drugs, and that just adds to the problem. It's best just to leave it in the closet. If you've already done the deed, and feel that your home is a little heavier feeling than before, you may want to discard the board. It may be acting as a portal to other energies. Try cleansing your space with White Sage, or try another method with Epsom Salt and Rubbing Alcohol. Clearly state, either out loud or with your inside voice, that their presence is not acceptable, and they need to leave now. Make it clear that this is your home.

QUESTION~How do you know if an item is haunted?

How do I know if I have a haunted item?

ANSWER~It can be concluded that a particular item is haunted if spiritual activity increases or begins altogether in a home after that item is introduced into the property. If you suspect that you have a haunted item, try removing it from the home for a few days and see if the activity decreases. If activity decreases after the item is removed, then you probably have a haunted item.

QUESTION~How does an item become haunted?

ANSWER~ With most of the items in the museum, they have been used in rituals, usually when spells are being cast. Although the items are not "possessed," energy can be sent towards an object. Items can hold energy within or around them, and it is usually the result of the energy being sent to the object by an individual.

Ok, it seems that someone told me incorrectly that Morton Cemetery here in Milton was a black cemetery. After some research, it appears that, that now is not the case. It actually has someone famous in there. A United States Senator named Jackson Morton. Here is the website about it. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=7826211
