Jefferson County Pet Project Working to Keep Jefferson County Pets in their homes!

05/27/2026

🆘We are out of space and out of alternative kennel options.

️We took in 27 dogs today filling up the rest of our empty kennels. We have 0 kennels open for tomorrow.

We have 421 animals in our care including:

🐾 109 pets available for adoption (70 dogs, 28 cats, and11 pocket pets)

🐾44 pets on stray hold
(31 dogs 13 cats)

🐾50 more pets waiting for spay/neuter or preparing to come up for adoption

We are doing everything we possibly can to avoid making heartbreaking decisions, but we truly need help — your help. And there are so many ways you can make a difference right now.

🆘️If you find a stray pet:
Please do not immediately bring them to the shelter unless they are sick, injured, or in danger. Most lost pets are found close to home. Post on social media. Ask neighbors. Talk to mail carriers. File a found pet report on our website. You may reunite a family faster than we can.

😥If you are missing a pet:
Check with HHHS Lost & Found Pets ASAP and check in person DAILY. File a lost pet report on our website. Make sure your microchip information is updated. (And if your pet isn’t microchipped yet, we can microchip them for just $20 during business hours.)

🏡If you can adopt:
PLEASE come see us. Every dog besides 2 puppies is included in our Pick Your Price adoption special with a $0 minimum adoption fee. That means you choose what you pay… even if that is nothing at all.

Yes. Really.

(All normal adoption policies and procedures still apply.)

If you are on the fence about adopting, consider:
🐾 Foster-to-adopt
🐾 Slumber party fostering
🫶 Temporary fostering to help empty a kennel!
We provide supplies and vet care while pets are in foster.

Can’t adopt or foster?
💸Donate if you can. We constantly need towels, small blankets, puppy chew toys, bleach, paper towels, and other supplies. Monetary donations help cover day-to-day care and offset costs while adoption fees are waived.

Can’t donate?
🗣Sharing helps more than you know. Commenting helps. Tagging friends helps. Talking about these pets helps. Every share increases the chance that one more dog gets seen before we run out of space.

We didn’t create this problem. But every single day we are trying our best to be part of the solution. We just need our community beside us right now.

Biscuit is one of our longer term residents waiting patiently for someone to finally choose him. Maybe you can help us share him. Maybe you know his future family. Maybe… it’s you. 🫶

We open tomorrow at 11:30am in Topeka, KS.

Today was a pretty fun day at the Pantry! Generosity and kindness abound in the Village & we were the beneficaries! Katie’s favorite Bit O Honey plus smarties & Werthers! How about cinnamon rolls or garlic bread and even a peach pie! We were even treated to some genuine lemonade stand lemonade! ❤️ Thank you everyone for the yummies and the offers to lend a hand! Thank You!

The information in this article is good BUT: if you call for veterinary advice you have to pay… just a heads up!

Lawn season is here, and so is a question worth knowing the answer to before you fertilize.

Most lawn fertilizers contain ingredients that are genuinely dangerous to dogs. Liquid products need a minimum of two to six hours to dry completely. Granular products require at least 24 hours for full soil absorption. And some common w**d and feed formulas stay hazardous longer than the label suggests.

Our latest blog breaks down what makes these products harmful, what symptoms to watch for, and what to do if your dog is exposed.
