As Nixa continues to grow, so do the demands on your fire district. We respond to thousands of emergencies each year, making us one of the busiest fire districts in southwest Missouri. More homes, businesses, and residents mean more calls for service, but funding has not kept pace.
One of our biggest challenges is staffing. Nationally recognized staffing standards recommend four firefighters on an engine, yet we often respond with only two. Studies show critical tasks like search, rescue, and fire attack can be completed about 30% faster with a four-person crew. When lives are on the line, minutes matter.
At the same time, we are frequently handling multiple emergencies at once. There are times when every unit is already committed, and the next emergency may have to wait until a crew becomes available.
We also continue to lose experienced firefighters to higher-paying departments. When they leave, we lose not just personnel, but years of local knowledge about our streets, buildings, and hazards—experience that takes years to rebuild.
The proposed 1% sales tax is about keeping pace with Nixa’s growth. It would improve staffing, help retain experienced firefighters, replace aging equipment, and ensure we can continue to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community.
This is not about asking for more than we need. It is about making sure that when you call 911, the right people and resources are available to respond quickly and safely.
