Dr. Anne Barbara Underhill (1920-2003) was a Vancouver-born astrophysicist widely recognized for her groundbreaking work on early-type stars, among the first stars to form in the universe. She also helped pioneer the study of hot blue stars and developed advanced calculation techniques that deepened scientists’ understanding of stellar atmospheres. Over the course of her career, she became one of the world’s leading authorities in the field and received numerous honors for her contributions to astronomy and astrophysics.

She was the daughter of Frederic Clare Underhill and Irene Anna (Creery) Underhill. Her father’s family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, from Tipton in England’s West Midlands in the 1890s. The family’s earlier English ancestry has not yet been confirmed.

Another Artist Among the Underhill Descendants of North America!

One noted descendant of William Underhill (ca. 1731–1815) of Kent County, Maryland/Boone County, Kentucky, was Ronald Edward Street (1950–2016), a distinguished artist who spent 30 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

If you’ve visited—or are planning to visit—the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, be sure to stop by Gallery 504 on the 1st floor to see Tullio Lombardi’s marble sculpture Adam (c. 1490–1495). The Museum considers it the first life-sized marble statue made since antiquity and the most important Italian Renaissance sculpture in North America. Ronald was among the conservators who played a key role in the 12-year restoration after the pedestal collapsed in 2002. Links below provide Ronald’s obituary and additional information about the statue.
