Masonry has been an integral part of California for more than 150 years. During the Gold Rush of 1849, thousands of settlers came to California in search of fortune. Many of these men were Masons and brought with them Masonic values and traditions. Not surprisingly, some of California’s first Masonic lodges were established in the mining towns of the Gold Country. In 1850 - the same year that California became a state - the Grand Lodge of California was established in Sacramento. Within 10 years, the number of Masonic lodges in the new state had grown from 11 to 130, while membership soared from 258 to more than 5,000. Over the years, the Masons have played a key role in shaping the history of California. To date, 19 California governors have been Masons, and at least four California Masons have been elected to the U.S. Today there are more than 60,000 members and about 340 lodges, making the Grand Lodge of California one of the largest in the world.

This year was intense. We set a goal to clear our roster in less than six months and raise every candidate to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason by the end of September. We succeeded in raising all nine.

The unity, effort, and hard work from everyone made this happen. What makes Oxnard Lodge 341 special is that we are truly friends outside the lodge too. We are from Oxnard, we are permanent residents, and we are building something real together.

Just a few years ago, we were close to losing our charter with only four active members. We brought in affiliates who helped us in the short term and gave 341 the chance to grow into a strong lodge with more than 20 active members today.

The leadership, dedication, and a real five year plan showed what can happen when people stay committed. To the captain of the ship, thank you for never jumping ship when the waters were rough and things were not in our favor.

We will keep pushing, striving, and working as one unit instead of individuals.

As a Past Master of 341 once said, “Are you from the lodge or for the lodge?” This year showed that we are for the lodge.

Congratulations to all the new Master Masons.

🔨 NO SHORTCUTS

“To succeed in anything, you don't have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren't: consistent, determined, and willing to work for it. No shortcuts.”
— Tom Brady

Before anyone gets excited in the comments: Tom Brady is NOT a Freemason.

But a man doesn't have to be a Mason to say something that should resonate with Masons.

There is something deeply familiar in this statement.

Freemasonry doesn't promise shortcuts.

We don't walk into a Lodge one evening and walk out a finished product. We don't hear a lecture once and suddenly possess its wisdom. We don't memorize a piece of ritual and automatically understand what it is trying to teach us.

The work takes time.

Stone is shaped one strike at a time.

Ritual is learned one line at a time.

Knowledge is gained one lesson at a time.

Character is built one decision at a time.

And perhaps most importantly, a better man is built one day at a time.

We live in a world obsessed with results while often ignoring the process that produces them. We see someone's success but not the thousands of ordinary days that came before it.

That's where Brady's words hit home.

You don't necessarily have to be extraordinary.

You have to be consistent when enthusiasm disappears.

Determined when progress becomes difficult.

And willing to work when nobody is watching, applauding, handing you a title, or giving you recognition.

That's as true inside the Lodge as it is outside of it.

Want to become better at ritual?

Practice.

Want to understand the philosophy of the Craft?

Study.

Want stronger Brotherhood?

Show up.

Want a better Lodge?

Help build one.

Want to become a better man?

Start working on the one you see in the mirror.

The working tools were never meant to sit polished in a display case.

They were given to us because there is work to be done.

Not someday.

Not when conditions are perfect.

Not when somebody else starts first.

Today.

No shortcuts.

Just another swing of the hammer.

🔨 Keep Seeking Light.

Note: Tom Brady is not known to be a Freemason. His words are being shared here because the principle expressed provides a useful parallel to the lessons of personal discipline, perseverance, and self-improvement found within the Craft.
