Friends of Campus Park Friends of Campus Park is a non-profit affiliated group working to partner with the City of Oxnard.

A grass roots collective of Oxnard residents and supporters have been advocating for botanical garden uses at Campus Park since 2011. In 2013, those efforts resulted in the City Council turning down a more active, sports complex like development in favor of adopting a stance that Campus Park must include spaces for a more quiet and passive use in the form of botanical gardens and other more relaxed, natural types of settings. In 2019, The Friends of Campus Park (FOCP) was formed by a core group of these local advocates, initially under the umbrella of the non-profit Oxnard Heritage Foundation. In 2023 the FOCP transitioned into its own non-profit, 501c3 status, with a governing board with a mandate to continue its outreach and share their knowledge and expertise.

The mission of the FOCP is “to improve the quality of life of Oxnard’s diverse community by providing enjoyable and inspiring places through connections with people, nature, and by creating educational opportunities and environmental awareness”.

Volunteer Slots

Friday, October 16th
6–9 PM — Help stage artwork, chairs, etc.

Saturday, October 17th
10 AM–12 PM — Setup and help vendors
12–3 PM — Assist coordinators, offer help to guests and vendors, and pick up trash
3–6 PM — Assist coordinators, offer help to guests and vendors, and pick up trash
6–9 PM — Assist coordinators, offer help to guests and vendors, and pick up trash
9–10 PM — Help with breakdown

One of our board members, Angela Whitecomb, talks about the FOCP’s proposed Volunteer Corps plan. Such a large space will need a good volunteer plan. We hope to partners with the City of Oxnard to help create the best plan forward.

To our Volunteers: Thank you for your hard work and dedication! Over the past few years you have helped maintain some of out public spaces near downtown Oxnard by providing native landscapes to help with water savings and help bring in beneficial insects to our area. Now that Campus Park is in the construction phase, things are beginning to move a little bit faster. In the next couple of weeks we will be reaching out to reconnect with you and ask you about your interests. Stay tuned!

Our friend and FOCP board member, Laurence Nicklin, was kind enough to help deliver our message to you about our guiding principles. We traveled to the beautiful Ventura Botanical Gardens to meet with him. Take a look! Laurence’s experience, of over three decades with garden management and design, also helped shape some of Campus Park’s features. He has brought lots of knowledge to many local gardens, including designing the South African Garden at Taft Gardens in Ojai, Seaside Gardens in Carpinteria and Ventura Botanical Gardens. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful friend!
