Friends of Campus Park

Friends of Campus Park Friends of Campus Park is a non-profit affiliated group working to partner with the City of Oxnard.

A grass roots collective of Oxnard residents and supporters have been advocating for botanical garden uses at Campus Park since 2011. In 2013, those efforts resulted in the City Council turning down a more active, sports complex like development in favor of adopting a stance that Campus Park must include spaces for a more quiet and passive use in the form of botanical gardens and other more relaxe

d, natural types of settings. In 2019, The Friends of Campus Park (FOCP) was formed by a core group of these local advocates, initially under the umbrella of the non-profit Oxnard Heritage Foundation. In 2023 the FOCP transitioned into its own non-profit, 501c3 status, with a governing board with a mandate to continue its outreach and share their knowledge and expertise.

The mission of the FOCP is “to improve the quality of life of Oxnard’s diverse community by providing enjoyable and inspiring places through connections with people, nature, and by creating educational opportunities and environmental awareness”.

After years of advocacy, Campus Park is closer than ever.

In December, we submitted a draft agreement to the City of Oxnard that would establish a long-term partnership to help this 33-acre park succeed—not just be built, but thrive.

We shared why this matters and what comes next in our latest newsletter. 🔗 Link: https://www.friendsofcampuspark.org/so/24PlTO98N?languageTag=en.

The most powerful climate solution isn’t hidden in laboratories or locked behind billion-dollar technology.
It stands quietly along our roads, in our fields, and outside our homes.

A tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and stores it safely within its own living structure.
It cools the planet naturally, without noise, waste, or constant maintenance.

No factories. No complex machinery. No endless funding.
A tree grows on its own, heals itself, and becomes stronger with time.

It shelters wildlife, restores soil, protects water, and supports entire ecosystems.
Across generations, trees provide shade, oxygen, and stability—benefits that outlast most human-made systems.

While the world races to invent costly solutions to climate change, nature has already provided one.
Timeless. Efficient. Quietly powerful.

Our “Gateway to Campus Park” native plant landscape on 5th St. is just about done, just a few more details and all that will be needed is some love and care. Last Minute! Come join us this Saturday morning from 8-11am in our “last minute” mulching event to finish our 5th St. “Gateway to Campus Park” native planting. The City of Oxnard was kind enough to send some mulch over to our 5th St. location to get our native plants mulched and a couple of us decided “last minute” to get it started. We have some Cafe de Olla and pastries for you from Xielo, just bring a shovel! Only have 5, 10, 15 minutes? No worries, even if you just want to check out the landscape a get some coffee, chat with us, come on over! We’re at the corner of 5th and Fst at the Historic District in Downtown Oxnard.

Today’s planting event was a total success! Thanks to our wonderful FOCP Board Members, all our volunteers, the home owner and who helped make this happen. The Gateway to Campus Park just became a little more inspiring. We have one last step of putting in some mulch and will be doing that in the next couple of days. We’ll keep you updated.

What a great week of soil preparation for our native planting event this weekend. Some of our board members, Laurence and Aurelio, along with another gentleman, stepped up to help take out the w**ds with a sod cutter to make sure the soil was w**d free. We then asked the if they could kindly haul the w**ds out and they did! Next, we are laying down some w**d cloth to make sure the landscape space is w**d free. Lots of work but with strong collaborations we can get it done. We look forward to this weekend when we place all our plants into the ground with help from our volunteers and from and their volunteers. The Gateway to Campus Park on 5th st. is starting to look great!
