On April 9th during our monthly District Council Meeting, Kiwanis of Oxnard recognized Mari Tejeda Founder of VC Plant Swap, she has created a space where people come together, share knowledge, and maybe leave with more plants than they planned.
We recognize Mari for her work in bringing community together and building a space where education, generosity, and community thrive.
Oxnard Kiwanis President, Rodney Medina presented her with the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for her outstanding work and impact in our community.
Here in Ventura County, we’re lucky to live in a place where plants are more than just scenery—they’re part of who we are. They clean our air, support wildlife, and if we’re being honest…some of us are just trying really hard to keep one houseplant alive at a time.
But beyond that, plants connect us—to the land and to each other. And just as important are the people who share that knowledge and passion with others. The ones who create opportunities for learning, sustainability, and community—often through something as simple as a plant swap. Because somehow, trading a cutting of a pothos can turn into a full-on conversation, new friendships, and maybe even a little unsolicited gardening advice.
Those spaces matter. They bring people together and help grow not just plants, but community.
