Barksdale Reading Institute

Barksdale Reading Institute The Barksdale Reading Institute works to significantly improve Mississippi students' pre-literacy and reading skills.

The Barksdale Reading Institute works to improve the overall quality of public education in Mississippi through strategic literacy initiatives and the placement and support of highly-qualified school administrators. BRI was founded in 2000 by Jim and Sally Barksdale, who, after researching the state of education in America, became convinced that reading is the most fundamental skill that every chi

ld must master in order to become successful. The Barksdales’ $100 million dollar donation established the Barksdale Reading Institute and funded the Mississippi Principal Corps, a program that trains and develops highly-effective school administrators throughout the state. The Barksdales’ generosity has enabled us to partner with public schools, public universities and the state department of education to dramatically improve the quality of reading education in Mississippi’s schools.

It’s a bittersweet day at The Barksdale Reading Institute as we watch our last day come to a close. Over the past 20+ years we’ve had the joy of working with countless educators, policy makers, researchers, organizations, community and government leaders, and most importantly… children and families, to help improve literacy in Mississippi. Thank you to Jim Barksdale for identifying the mission, setting the bar high, and generously funding the work. Thank you to our partners and friends in the field, who will continue this critical work. And thank you to our cadre of incredibly dedicated and talented staff who made it their life’s mission to elevate literacy to the Barksdale standard.

We are pleased to know that our work will live on through other organizations who have stepped up to take certain pieces on as their own. We will share information about our projects and programs that we have “spun”‘off to find new homes with some of our sister organizations in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

Tune in to hear about Mississippi!

Mississippi was once ranked last in the nation for reading achievement, but today has turned the tide. The state reached the national average for 4th grade reading on the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress and scored above the national average in 2022 in spite of the pandemic. The folk...

Sharing from The Parents' Campaign!

If your student needs minor medical or behavioral health care services during the summer months, the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) and the Mississippi Department of Education have you covered. They are partnering to provide telehealth services free of charge to any student who is enrolled in a Mississippi K-12 public school.

The School-based Telehealth Summer Program begins June 1, and participation is simple. To make an appointment, just call 601.815.2020 and ask for a summer telehealth visit. Your child can see a UMMC nurse practitioner or licensed counselor using a smartphone, tablet, or computer wherever you are. A parent or guardian must be present for the virtual visit.

Minor medical care is available seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Behavioral health services are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more at https://www.umc.edu/Healthcare/Telehealth/Schools/Summer/FAQs.
