In June you can celebrate National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month by taking advantage of freshly picked crops during the peak season for many early garden and farm harvests.

The observance of National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month has taken place since 1991 as a way to promote produce growers. Check out the local Farmer's Markets to support your overall health AND your community's hardworking farmers!

Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Centennial Memorial Park, located at 225 E 17th St., Anniston, honors Alabama’s fallen military service members. Visitors can view the names, inscribed on the walls, of those who perished during World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. In 2012, Centennial Memorial Park was designated as the official location of the Alabama Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Iraq and Afghanistan memorials.

National Water Safety Month in May prepares us for recreational activities in the upcoming summer months.

The World Waterpark Association, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, The National Recreation & Park Association, and the American Red Cross created National Water Safety Month to raise awareness about water safety. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death worldwide. It happens quickly and silently and is never what you think. Even non-fatal accidents can have devastating long-term effects. Drowning can happen to anyone, and it takes awareness and support from all of us to prevent a tragedy.

Every year on May 22nd, the International Day for Biological Diversity seeks to increase awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues.

The UN General Assembly created the International Day for Biological Diversity in 1993. The original date was December 29th. Due to the busy holiday season, many countries could not focus their time and energy on planning events for this day. In 2000, the UN General Assembly changed the date to May 22nd.

The health of the earth suffers when biodiversity decreases. Biodiversity is very important for many reasons. It supplies the earth with clean water and oxygen. Biodiversity also enables plants to grow, which produces food for humans and animals. Other benefits of biodiversity is that it keeps pests and diseases in check and protects against flooding.
