🏛️ What's one thing Freemasonry has taught you that you carry into everyday life?

For some Brothers, it's patience. For others, it's the discipline of showing up — to a meeting, to a struggling friend, to your own promises.

Over 150 years of the Craft have shaped countless men right here in Oxford, Alabama. We'd love to hear from our Brothers — past, present, and those just curious about the journey.

A question we get asked a lot: "What is Freemasonry, really?"

Here's our answer:
It's the neighbor who shows up when you need him. The mentor who gives his time freely. The husband and father who holds himself to a higher standard — not because someone's watching, but because of what he believes.

At Hartwell Lodge #101, we've been that kind of brotherhood in Oxford for over 150 years. Good men, becoming better.
Curious? Drop a comment or send us a message. There's no obligation — just a conversation.

🔨 Tonight is a special night at Hartwell Lodge #101.

We are proud to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone — 60 years of Masonic service by our beloved Brother, Fred Prater. 🎖️

Six decades of dedication to the Craft, to this lodge, and to the Brotherhood. Brother Fred embodies everything Freemasonry stands for — integrity, loyalty, and a life well lived in service to others. Tonight, we honor him as he deserves.

Come join us as we recognize this extraordinary achievement.

The Internal vs. The External

As we head into the weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on one of our earliest lessons: “It is the internal, and not the external qualifications of a man that should recommend him to be made a Mason.”

In a world that is often obsessed with the "external"—titles, status, and appearances—our craft challenges us to look deeper. How are we working on our own "Internal Temple" this week? Are we practicing the relief and truth we talk about behind closed doors?

Enjoy the weekend, Brethren. Take some time to labor in your communities and rest with your families.

Did You Know? The "Secret" George Washington Portrait

Most people know Brother George Washington was a Mason, but did you know that the only portrait he ever sat for while wearing his full Masonic regalia was commissioned by Alexandria Lodge No. 22?

Painted by William Williams in 1794, Washington specifically asked the artist to paint him "as he was"—not to hide his age or facial scars. To Washington, the authenticity of a Brother was more important than the polish of a President.

It’s a great reminder that in the Lodge, we meet on the level, regardless of our titles in the outside world.

It is with heavy hearts and fraternal affection that Hartwell Lodge announces the passing of our beloved Brother, Ronnie Higginbotham.

Brother Ronnie has laid down his working tools and has been summoned to the Celestial Lodge Above by the Grand Architect of the Universe. His presence, wisdom, and dedication to our Craft will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of sitting in Lodge with him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Brother.

As we face the beginning of a new week, we are reminded of one of the earliest lessons taught in Masonry regarding time—our most precious and fleeting resource.

We are taught to divide our time wisely: part for our usual vocations, part for rest and refreshment, and part for serving God and a distressed, worthy brother.

How are you prioritizing your time this week? Are you carving out time for service and self-improvement amid your busy schedule? Let us know your focus for the week in the comments below.

My Brethren, the roll of the workmen has been called, and Mr. Harsel Loe Edward Durham has not answered to his name.

He has laid down the working tools of the Craft and with them he has left that mortal part for which he no longer has use.

His labors here below have taught him to divest his heart and conscience of the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting his mind as a living stone for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Strengthened in his labors here by faith in God, and confident of expectation of immortality, he has sought admission to the Celestial Lodge above.

Services to celebrate and honor the life of Mr. Harsel Loe Edward Durham, a World War Two United States Naval Veteran, will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Johnson will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.

Military funeral honors have been requested by the family. Out of respect for those arrangements, Hartwell will not be performing any Masonic rites.
