Let us be real clear in Midwesternese: WATCH FOR DEER. 🤎

Midwest Lingo aside, you should know deer are most active at dawn and dusk, and during the rut, they really don’t care about looking both ways before crossing. (That's because the "rut" means mating season.)

They also tend to travel in groups during the rut, so if you see one, expect more close by.

And if a collision seems inevitable? Stay in your lane and break steadily — more damage can be caused by swerving into another lane or into the ditch.

Dubuque Street Trail just north of the Iowa River at the east entrance to the Conklin Quarry will be temporarily closed on Saturday, October 17 to facilitate driveway repairs. Please watch for closure signage and stay clear of the area while contractors complete these repairs. Heavy equipment will be in use for these repairs and a trail closure will improve the safety for trail users and contractors. This temporary closure is only expected for one day and the trail will reopen once the repairs have been completed. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Crafty volunteers needed! ✂️

Our education team has constructed a pretty cool oak tree in the Conservation Education Center. It’s almost complete but needs some leaves! We’re going to leaf it out with ~100 crepe paper oak leaves that we create with volunteers.

Our leaf-making party is Oct 29, 9-noon (ish).l at the CEC in Kent Park. Along with helping us, you’ll learn the craft of crepe paper construction. And we’ll have tea, cookies, and good vibes to share! ☺️

We have 12 volunteer slots to fill. To sign up head to our bio (instagram) or comments (facebook) for the link.

🍂 Pop-up Fall Foliage Hike 🍂

Have you been looking forward to the changing of the leaves? Or perhaps curious about the ecology of falling leaves?

Join us on a fall foliage hike to appreciate the changing colors of fall. Along this one to two mile hike, we will talk about why leaves change colors and lose their leaves along with the ecological benefits those leaves provide.

We need some volunteers to help with an invasive species removal project. With volunteers, we'll head to a patch of an invasive flower and clip the seedheads before they can spread. We'll walk a short distance (1/4 mile) on trail, then cut into the prairie a little ways to the patch where we'll spend time clipping and bagging seedheads.

The work session is Friday, Oct 16, 9 AM. Please sign up through the link in the comments.

There will be a separate volunteer event to clean bird feeders at 10 AM if you want to help us out with multiple projects!
