When we first surveyed the county's recently acquired Rockport track, the former Morris Canal towpath had collected a mess of bramble, limbs and downed trees during the 100 years since the canal's abandonment. With the help of the New Jersey Youth Corps of Phillipsburg, we were able to clear a towpath trail, with spur trails on its east and west end, and recently installed interpretive signage.

The two photos below show the same view on 11/19/2024 and 5/1/2026. This MCG trail is on Rockport Road, just west of Hazen Road, with the parking area a bit west of east end trailhead.

As is the WCPF's Spring tradition, we partnered with the Musconetcong Watershed Association for their annual Earth Day cleanup. We chose the Kinney Road section of Waterloo Valley, as it's a hotbed for bikers, paddlers, swimmers and fishermen, and there is a lot of trash about. Out team was able to collect 20 bags of trash, assorted debris, and one very large and heavy mattress.

Thanks to all of the WCPF volunteers who came out today to help make our little corner of Earth a better place!

Morris Canal boat basins served a number of different purposes. First and foremost, they were for turning, as the canal boats were 91’ long, and the canal only 40’ wide. Basins were typically located near population centers, where boats could stop overnight and on Sundays, when the canal was not open, and canalers would have access to canal stores and blacksmith shops. Boat repairs were also made on basins, where repair shops were often located. Nearby churches would be visited by canalers on Sunday, and the basin might be used for baptisms. During the winter, the canal would freeze over and the boats could not run. But basins were used for ice-cutting, which was a big business in the days before electricity and refrigeration.

All of these things took place on the boat basin at Port Murray, which was a booming 19th century canal town, named for James B. Murray, president of the Morris Canal & Banking Company. Visit the boat basin via the trailhead on Cherry Tree Bend Road, and please mind the private property boundaries.

To all of our members, volunteers, and supporters, the Warren County Parks Foundation wishes to thank you all for a very successful 2025!

The WCPF was instrumental in the opening of the Heritage Museum at Meadow Breeze Park. After helping prepare the historic Wandling home; cleaning, paining, and installing flooring, many volunteers remember the snowy day last December when we moved the exhibits from Bread Lock Park. In addition, many volunteers helped construct and install the full-size boat silhouette that now resides at Meadow Breeze Park.

The WCPF also partnered with the Phillipsburg Youth Corps to develop and open a new section of Morris Canal Greenway trail at Rockport, on land that was acquired by Warren County the previous year. Of course, trails need to be maintained, and WCPF spent hundreds of hours clearing, mowing, and painting at various sites across the county. In addition, we participated in site cleanups, partnering with AmeriCorps and Musconetcong Watershed Association.

The WPCF also erected many interpretive signs along the Morris Canal Greenway, which were funded and designed by the Warren County Morris Canal Committee.

We participated in numerous events during the year, including the Warren County Bicentennial Celebration, the Hope Township Green Faire, and Waterloo Canal Day, and held events for our own members, such as tours of Port Colden and Plane 9 West, and our annual membership lunch meeting.

As we look ahead to 2026, there are many more projects and events we will be involved with, as we meeting new opportunities and challenges. If you would like to help out, please consider supporting us, either through membership, a donation, or volunteerism. This can be done through our website; https://warrenparksfoundation.com/support/

On behalf of the Warren County Parks Foundation, we wish all a joyous Holiday Season and a wonderful New Year!
