The Leap Frog Program, Oxford, MS
What is Leap Frog? We offer free tutoring and enrichment services to 140 first, second and third graders in the Oxford City and Lafayette County schools. Students attend twice a week during the academic school year. Lafayette students attend on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Oxford students attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We place stud
ents with trained tutors from 3:00-4:30, tutors help students improve their reading skills. Tutors have gone through a three-hour training course on how to effectively use our reading curriculums. First graders will learn using the program Readsters, and second and third graders will learn using the program Phonics Boost. Both programs have been proven to show dramatic results. Since incorporating these new curriculums, we no longer focus primarily on homework completion. If during the tutoring time, 3:00-4:30, there is time to work on homework, the tutor will. But, our primary goal is to have the students reading on grade level when they exit the program in May. After tutoring students participate in free-play, or planned enrichment activities geared toward opening their eyes to new experiences. September is "Arts", October is "Health and Nutrition", November is "Serving Others", February is "Culinary", March is "Expressive Arts", and April is "Earth Month". Each week we will have one afternoon activity focused on the month's theme. We will collaborate with community partners to help bring educational and exciting programs to our students. Leap Frog has been operating for 25 years, and counting! Every year brings new and returning students. We take great pride in the work we do with these students and enjoy the time we have with them.
