The Oxbow-Masardis Snowmobile Club was founded in 1987 by local lodge owners who saw the need for a recreational destination where snowmobilers could get away from crowded trails and enjoy "small town" hospitality. Oxbow, located in central Aroostook County, is named for the oxbow in the Aroostook River. Our town has a year around population of around 45 residents. Our sister town, Masardis, lies
7 miles north on State Route 11. Masardis is best known to snowmobilers as the site of the Carl Sherman Memorial Suspension Bridge. The Oxbow-Masardis Snowmobile Club, located half way between Millinocket and Fort Kent on the ITS 85 trail, is the hub connecting 5 other clubs. The club maintains over 80 miles of trails which are primarily on forest roads offering a higher quality of riding. Our trails are located in 2 different counties and 10 different townships. The Maine Interconnecting Trail System (ITS) routes ITS 81, ITS 85 and ITS 86 intersect in Oxbow on the western most north/south trail in Aroostook County. Several miles of local club trails also provide an opportunity to observe the many forms of wildlife present in the North Maine Woods. The Oxbow-Masardis snowmobile trails are maintained from mid-December to the beginning of April, weather conditions permitting. Our groomer operators log about 450 hours during an average snow season using our 2012 Tucker model 2000 SnoCat and a Mogul Master drag. The average yearly snowfall in the Oxbow-Masardis area ranges from 120 to 150 inches. In 2013 the Club was fortunate to acquire the former Carl and Rita Sherman homestead. It is now the site of the Oxbow-Masardis Snowmobile Clubhouse and Groomer Shed. During the off-season local sporting camps offer many recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, bird watching and both upland and big game hunting.
