The Shiawassee Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization that is led by a volunteer board of directors. We carry out our mission in a variety of ways, described below:

Adoptions
The Shiawassee Humane Society offers adoptions by:
• Introducing to the public, animals available to be companion pets.
• Matching potential adopters with the needs of the pet and the needs of the adopter.
• Collaborating with other organizations to find temporary and permanent homes for companion animals.
• Offering financial assistance to make adoption available for all income levels. Sheltering
The Shiawassee Humane Society offers sheltering by:
• Being a safe and clean place of refuge for pets that are abandoned, abused, neglected or simply unwanted.
• Operating a shelter that houses up to 100 homeless pets at any given time.
• Striving to never turn away a homeless companion animal in need. Spay & Neuter Efforts
The Shiawassee Humane society aids in spaying & neutering by:
• Requiring all animals that pass through our facility to be “altered’ prior to adoption, averaging 500 animals per year.
• Providing referrals for having animals altered at low cost facilities.
• Providing education about the importance of spay/neuter programs in the community. Education
The Shiawassee Humane Society provides education through:
• Extensive adoption counseling for every adopter.
• Special presentations and resources for school children, scout troops, civic clubs and other groups.
• Educating the community about the importance of spaying and neutering at every opportunity.

🌞 Sally Sue 🌞

Miss Sally Sue is a dog close to our hearts. Does anyone remember Ziggy? Sally reminds me of Ziggy, a long-term dog who won the hearts of many but took nearly a year to find his forever home!

It has been truly hard to see Sally go through some of the challenges and bad luck she's faced, including her current recovery from ACL surgery. But let me tell you, she has come such a long way during her time at SHS and remains a bundle of sunshine despite everything. She has grown up at the shelter, and she is so ready for the RIGHT home.

The right home starts as a foster home, where she can continue healing from surgery. She should be the only dog or kept separate from other dogs for the next couple of months. While she recovers, she'll need mental stimulation until she can get back on her feet and return to the zoomies and playtime she loved before.

Sally Sue is a wonderful dog who deserves to find the home of her dreams and someone who will stick with her. 💛

There’s new SHS babies at The Catvalier Lounge available for adoption!! Winston and Violet are sweet little babies, social and friendly, and ready to go! Griffin has come a long way from the streets he was born on, and in spite of the look on his face, is working hard at becoming a big lap cat baby!! Stop on out to the Catvalier Lounge for a visit! You don’t have to be interested in adopting to go give these kitties some love (but it’s also ok if you decide to adopt 😁)…you can go visit just to enjoy some baked goods and some one-on-one with kitties who would love the attention… Or in Griffin’s case, benefit from all the human exposure he can get!

Staff member Aubrey took a break from helping us with her amazing vet school skills and animal care last week to treat-test our kitties! 😻🐟 And what did we discover? They LOVE freeze-dried minnows! 😂💛

Who's a happy-go-lucky girl who brings joy wherever she goes? Sally Sue! ✨

Sally Sue is a s***ky gal with plenty of energy to spare! Sally has been at the shelter for many months now, but has come such a long way. She is such a loving, playful girl. Right now she's taking it easy while she recovers from ACL surgery.

Because she's still healing, Sally Sue is looking for the right family to welcome her through our foster-to-adopt program. If you're willing to help this sweet girl through recovery while she settles into her new home, she'll reward you with plenty of love, s***k, and Sally Sue sunshine! 🌞

SUNDAY'S WEEK IN REVIEW!
Friday October 9th

When Hotdog found some comfort in laying down outside after his heartworm injection, our director Liz dropped the one million things she was doing to help ❤ Here they are, just chitchatting and relaxing in the sun, helping Hotdog feel just a little bit better ❤ This picture of our director putting everything aside to be there for a dog that needed her, represents EXACTLY what we do and why we do it here at SHS. It's ALL for the love of the animals!

Backstory: Poor Hotdog is hurting. He had finally recovered from his hip surgery, just to now go thru treatment for his heartworm positive status. It is a painful injection given deep in the lumber/back muscles near the hip between the lower back vertebrae. All medical jargon aside, it hurts. The injection hurts, and the treatment hurts. Pain meds only take the edge off. This little dude just cried and cried and couldn't get comfortable. We took him out to potty, and he just flopped down in the sun and finally relaxed just the tiniest bit...which was HUGE. He didn't want to come back in. We weren't going to make him ❤️

Hotdog's one BIG stroke of good luck, is he landed in foster with Paula and Jerry. This dynamic duo takes our hardest cases, our biggest emergencies, and pours their hearts into their care until they can be adopted. We truly couldn't do what we do without the love and support of our SHS community!!

❤️A TUG AT YOUR HEARTSTRINGS THANKYOU FROM A GRATEFUL CAT❤️

We welcomed our new friend Roman to SHS ❤ A kind hearted good samaritan noticed a cat very ill, in distress and contacted us. Upon arrival, Roman was struggling. Roman is an adult cat barely over 5 lbs 😢 He's emaciated with uncontrollable diarrhea. His tail, hind end, legs, paws, and pelvic area were caked with dried f***s. His back paws were so red and inflamed he couldnt put pressure on them. We cleaned him up to discover that he had open wounds from f***l scalds, a form of moist dermatitis (skin inflammation) caused when digestive enzymes, bacteria, and moisture from prolonged contact with f***s break down and burn the skin. He was so painful we had to schedule a sedated treatment with our vet. We gave him some pain meds, a nice warm bath, trimmed up what we could, and coated his sore aching skin with ointment. We tucked him in with a heat pad...and then this happened 🥹
