The SafeCenter Empower. Advocate. Educate. Prevent. SafeCenter now serves men and women who have experience intimate partner domestic violence or sexual assault.

SafeCenter was formed in 1983, but became an official non profit organization in 1984, when Janet Holden realized the need for an agency to help victims of intimate partner domestic violence. With help of concerned citizens and many volunteers, SafeCenter was the first safe place for battered women and their children. Philosophy Statement
SafeCenter advocates the right for every person, adult or child, to live in a non-violent environment where individuality and equality are recognized and respected. We seek to maintain a supportive atmosphere wherein victims are able to obtain information, explore options and ultimately make their own choices. We understand that the scope of domestic and sexual violence transcends our local community. Work against societal violence must be achieved through networking at the local, state and national levels. Heightened awareness can lead to changes in societyโ€™s attitudes about victims and the conditions which lead to violence. Domestic and sexual violence are crimes that not only affect the victims and their families but society as a whole. Interventions must support survivors and hold abusers accountable through coordinated community responses. Vision:
End domestic violence and sexual assault. SafeCenter services include:

24-Hour Crisis Line (877) 952-7283
Emergency Shelter
Information and Referrals
Individual Counseling & Advocacy
Basic Needs (Food & Clothing)
Housing Programs & Assistance

Healing Isnโ€™t Linear.

We often imagine healing as a straight line.
You take a step forward.
Then another.
And eventually, you arrive at โ€œokay.โ€

But real healing rarely works that way.
There are good days and hard days.
Moments of strength and moments when simply getting through the day is enough.
There may be laughter, tears, anger, peace, fearโ€”and sometimes all of it in the same week.

None of that means a survivor is going backward.

Healing is not about forgetting what happened.
It is not about pretending it didn't hurt.
It is not about becoming the person you were before.

Healing can mean finding your voice again.
Learning that your boundaries matter.
Discovering that you deserve safety.
Making choices for yourself.
Rebuilding trust.
Dreaming about a future that belongs to you.
And sometimes, healing simply means taking the next step.

At SafeCenter, survivors deserve a place where they can be met with compassion, support, advocacy, resources, and understandingโ€”without pressure to heal on anyone else's timeline.

Hope doesn't demand that you have it all figured out.
Hope simply reminds you that there can be a next step.

Help us keep hope moving forward.

Our office will be closed today
Monday, October 12th, in observance of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The SafeCenter recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day and honors the rich cultures, histories, traditions, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

We also recognize the importance of listening to and supporting Indigenous survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, respected, and supported in ways that honor their culture, identity, and individual experiences.

On this day, we encourage our community to take time to learn, listen, support Indigenous voices, and recognize the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities.

The SafeCenter stands with survivors of all backgrounds and is committed to providing compassionate, trauma-informed support to those impacted by domestic and sexual violence.

This week we are asking for grocery gift cards!

Our goal is $500 in donated gift cards this week.

When you go to the grocery store, add a gift card to your cart and support a survivor of domestic violence.

When survivors are navigating the challenges of leaving an abusive relationship, taking care of their families alone, and fighting for justice - they should not have to worry if they can afford groceries or how they are going to feed themselves and their families. Take this burden off of our clients and donate a grocery gift card this week!

Places to purchase gift cards:
Walmart
Meijer
Dollar General
Dollar General Market
Dollar Tree
Aldi
Kroger

World Mental Health Day โ€” October 10

Healing after trauma isn't always a straight line.

Domestic and sexual violence can have lasting effects on emotional and mental well-being. Survivors may experience anxiety, depression, fear, difficulty sleeping, trouble concentrating, or simply feeling overwhelmed.

Healing can take time.

Support might include counseling, trusted relationships, advocacy, healthy coping strategies, safety planning, or simply having someone who listens.

You don't have to have everything figured out today.

Your mental health matters.
Your healing matters.
You matter.

STAND WITH SURVIVORS. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. GIVE HOPE. ๐Ÿ’œ

Our Telethon is just a couple weeks away!

Every survivor deserves safety, support, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild their life. Your generosity helps make that possible. When you donate to our agency, youโ€™re not just giving money โ€” youโ€™re helping provide hope, resources, and a path toward a safer future.

Your donation can help us:
๐Ÿ’œ Provide safe shelter and emergency assistance for survivors and their children.
๐Ÿ’œ Support survivors with advocacy, safety planning, and crisis intervention.
๐Ÿ’œ Connect individuals and families with essential resources, including food, clothing, and personal care items.
๐Ÿ’œ Help survivors access counseling, emotional support, and healing services.
๐Ÿ’œ Assist with transportation and other needs as survivors work toward safety and independence.
๐Ÿ’œ Strengthen our agencyโ€™s ability to respond to survivors in crisis and meet the needs of our community.

Every dollar makes a difference. Every donation sends a message: survivors are not alone. ๐Ÿ’œ

Tune in, share our message, spread awareness, and consider making a donation. Whether you give $5, $50, or whatever you can, your support helps us continue our mission and make a lasting impact.

๐Ÿ’œ Donate. Share. Support. Empower.

๐Ÿ’œ Wear Purple Day is next Thursday October 15th!

Show survivors your support by wearing purple and standing with them. Let survivors know they are seen, supported, and not alone.

Together, we can raise awareness, show compassion, and remind every survivor that they have a community standing beside them.

Wear purple. Show your support. Spread the message. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

What kind of community do we want to leave behind? At SafeCenter, we envision one whereโ€ฆ

Survivors are believed.
People know where to turn for help.
Healthy relationships are the expectation โ€“ not the exception.
Children learn that love and control are not the same thing.
Boundaries are respected.
Consent is understood.
Asking for help is met with compassion.

This is the future weโ€™re working toward. And creating that future requires more than responding to violence when it happens. It requires โ€ฆ

Education
Outreach
Awareness
Intentional conversations
People willing to say, โ€œWe can do better.โ€
A community that is willing to invest in the work.

This is why your support of SafeCenter matters. Your gift helps make it possible to continue providing critical services to survivors TODAY while also working toward a safer community TOMORROW.

Letโ€™s build that future together.

We are grateful to Baker College for partnering with us during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Your support and commitment to raising awareness and supporting survivors mean so much to our community.

Throughout the month of October, we will have a resource table available in the OneStop with information and resources related to domestic and sexual violence awareness and support.

We are also hosting a donation drive. Donations can be dropped off at the OneStop, where a collection basket is located next to the resource table.

In addition, we invite you to take a moment to write an encouraging message for a survivor. Notecards are available at the table, providing an opportunity to share words of hope, strength, and support.

Thank you to everyone for helping us create a community where survivors feel supported, heard, and empowered. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉต
