The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association is the officially authorized organization that represents, assists and promotes the interests of Maryland's Thoroughbred owners and trainers. Membership in the MTHA is automatically extended to everyone licensed to own and/or train Thoroughbred race horses in this state. There is no membership fee. The MTHA's many activities and services are support

ed by a deduction of 2 percent off the top of purse monies at Maryland's three Thoroughbred race tracks. Guiding the MTHA is a 15-member board of directors, comprised of seven owners, seven trainers and one at-large member (either an owner or trainer). Further leadership is provided by a president and vice-president. Day-to-day administration is conducted by an executive secretary employed by the association. Elections for MTHA directors and officers are held at three-year intervals, with each term of service lasting three years. Members are encouraged to attend periodical board of directors meetings, as well as the annual general membership meeting. Notices of these meetings appear in the Calendar section of this Web site. Six standing committees carry out the MTHA's main functions: Backstretch and Safety, Finance, Health and Welfare, Legislative, Purse and Oversight. Additional special committees are formed when a need arises. The MTHA publishes a monthly newsletter that is mailed, free of charge, to all members.

We wanted to inform everyone of the passing of one of our community members, Jessie Jones also known as Cutty. Jessie was born in Charles Town, WV and moved to Maryland as a toddler. His father galloped at Pimlico.

Jessie was an excellent football player in High School. He grew up to follow in his father's footsteps working with horses as a groom and hotwalker at Pimlico and then Laurel working for the likes of Delp and the Frocks amongst others.

He is survived by a son and will be remembered for his kind, laid back nature and his willingness to always help a friend out. Service details to follow soon.
