The campus feels different today. The classrooms are empty, the playground is quiet, and there is no puppy or booming "hello" to greet you as you pass the head of school's office. The space where, for 24 years, Ben Shifrin carried out the school's mission to change the lives of students who learn differently sits silent and gleaming, awaiting the next era for our beloved school.

No number of words or even pictures could express the heartfelt thanks of the literally thousands of people in the Jemicy community who were impacted by Ben's dedication. This picture was taken a few weeks ago with this year's JE Community when Ben stopped by lunch with a special treat for everyone. This is how we will remember him--surrounded by the bright, smiling faces of children who love coming to school.

Have a wonderful retirement, Ben, and rest assured that your legacy will live on with every student who walks through the doors of Jemicy.

Why take a paper and pencil test when knowledge can be shown in so many ways?! At Jemicy, our alternative assessments, like our students, demonstrate unique strengths and out-of-the-box creativity while building the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed academically and promote teamwork and problem-solving. And, did we mention that the kids love it?

This year, our 9th-grade field exam was based on the game Settlers of Catan. The students became pieces in a giant game board, where they worked in teams to develop their own civilization. They collaborated to claim territory by trading in knowledge from their various classes and created a religion, government, foundational myth, ecology, and so much more! In this cross-curricular experiential exam, students were challenged to utilize all they have learned from the year from all their courses in one game that encourages teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

A highlight of the day was the arrival of our JE students, who showed up in peace to share their knowledge with the 9th graders and earn them more resources. Who says learning can’t be fun?

Off they go—successfully prepared for the next phase of their educational journey! The Y Group Celebration evoked an array of emotions—joy, pride, and yes, sadness as well. We have watched them grow from new students who are uncertain about what school will hold for them, into confident and curious learners ready for high school!

Their ceremony, like their education, was personalized as Head of the Lower & Middle School Michael Robinson and Director of Middle School Bridget Barley spoke about each student, sharing memories, laughs, and advice. The expressions on the student’s faces said it all.

We will miss you, Y Group, but you will always have a home at Jemicy LMS. Parents, please check your email for links to more fabulous photos.
