Jemicy School Jemicy School is a preeminent leader in the education of children (grades 1-12) with dyslexia and other related language-based learning differences.

JEMICY SCHOOL
Jemicy School, accredited by AIMS and the International Dyslexia Association, is a co-educational, independent school that provides a highly individualized, flexible, and challenging program for talented and bright, college-bound students with dyslexia or other related language-based learning differences. The school addresses students’ intellectual strengths and their learning needs by utilizing creative, multisensory, research-based programs and techniques to develop reading, writing, spelling, math, and organization skills; promote a love of learning; and prepare students for the intellectual and social challenges of college and life. Jemicy, founded in 1973, is an internationally recognized and preeminent leader in its field and provides a 21st century education for students between the ages of six and eighteen on its two Owings Mills, MD campuses. The school maintains a student-faculty ratio of 4:1, and class size ranges from 4 – 12 students. Academic and recreational summer programs are also offered. Jemicy School implements page guidelines to respect and protect participants and those within the community. We welcome comments, questions, and constructive feedback, as well as the sharing of relevant content. The School will remove (1) any comments that include offensive language, off-topic concepts, private information, or defamatory language, and (2) any posts that we find to be in violation of any of the above or Facebook’s Terms of Service. Thursday was a special day as we welcomed Y, C, and Star Group Grandfriends to campus for a glimpse into life at Jemicy. It is always heart-warming to see the joy and pride with which our students show their Grandfriends around their school.

Congratulations to former faculty member, alumna, and current parent Erin Berman Welsh ‘99 on publishing her first book, “The Worry Backpack: A Story About the Invisible Things We Carry.”

Erin shares, "This book was written for the kids who carry worries that other people may not be able to see, the overthinkers, the feel-everything kids, and the kids who sometimes just need to know they aren’t the only one carrying something heavy. I’m so excited to finally have it out in the world and especially excited to share it with the Jemicy community."

College application season is in full swing! We are also excited to say that acceptances are already rolling in with several seniors already committing to their top pick!

Over 60 colleges are scheduled to visit Jemicy this year, from as close as Towson and Stevenson to as far away as American University of Paris and Denver University. Whether students are looking for the big school experience like University of Maryland or for a more specialized next step like Rensselaer, you can be sure our college counselors are guiding the students every step of the way.

M Group students visited MPT station today to watch the filming of Chesapeake Collections. The students were taken through the entire process of how the show is filmed. Additionally, our very own Jemicy teachers were invited to participate and estimate the value of some collectible items. Stay tuned for more details on when the teachers will make their big debut! In the meantime, students will go on a relic hunt here at Jemicy and follow up with their own presentations on what they find. Experiential learning at its best! Join us on Monday, October 26, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Tomlinson Theater at Jemicy’s Upper School to explore and celebrate the strengths of the dyslexic brain. We will be viewing the 2025 documentary, “The Dyslexic Advantage.” Our guest speaker will be one of the dyslexic thinkers featured in the film, Krista Weltner, also an author, puppeteer, illustrator, and stop-motion animator will be sharing her inspirational journey. . Her puppetry work is featured in Laika Studio’s recent film “Wildwood.” Her book series, Everyday Adventures of Molly and Dyslexia will be available at the event.

This event is about moving beyond the usual narrative of struggle to highlight that one of the world’s most prevalent learning differences is a powerful engine for creativity, problem-solving, and discovery. The film explores the unique cognitive wiring of dyslexic individuals—who make up nearly one in five people—which has been a driving force behind some of humanity’s greatest achievements in science, art, and entrepreneurship.

The evening will conclude with a panel discussion of experts who understand how to develop dyslexic strengths, including Jemicy alum Jason Michael Berman ’98, award-winning producer and founder of A/Vantage Pictures, whose debut feature, Highest 2 Lowest, was directed by Spike Lee and starred Denzel Washington; Tiffany Garner, Psy.D., psychologist and educational evaluator; Harry Heaps ’18, alum and assistant director of development at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey; and Steph Jesse, Upper School English teacher, Jemicy parent, and dyslexic learner.
