Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States and celebrates Black history, culture, resilience, and progress.
Observed each year on June 19, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
At the JCC, we believe that learning about our shared history helps build understanding, strengthens community, and reminds us of the importance of dignity, belonging, and opportunity for all.
We honor the significance of this day and the ongoing contributions of Black Americans to our communities and our country.
