Earlier this week, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, announced a Holy Hour for Peace, which urges Catholics to help heal our divided world. Inspired by his invitation to prayer this half hour prayer service, which will include Bishop Cahill of Victoria, TX, Archbishop Hebda of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Bishop Kenney of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and Sr. Carol Zinn, Executive Director of LCWR, will reflect on the challenges facing the church and immigrant communities in our current climate and an opportunity to pray for those who have been most affected.

Today is the 4 year anniversary of a deadly tornado outbreak within Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky with one tornado cutting a 250 mile path through farms, forest, neighborhoods, and even across lakes taking the lives of 89 people with 74 of these people being Kentuckians and 672 people were injured. It takes approximately 3 to 5 years to recover from a disaster. Today we celebrated year 4️⃣ with a blessing of a new home for a sweet family!

Our partners for this home was Christian Public Services and Red Cross.

The family prayer and hurricane prayers came from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church & International Shrine of St. Jude in New Orleans. Just before the first anniversary Catholic Charities of Owensboro staff were in Louisiana for CCUSA Applied Institute for Disaster Excellence. We were learning to better assist our clients with their recovery. This prayer was shared with us in God’s perfect timing. We were one year post diaster and this prayer helped push us through the years to come.

Today we delivered some disaster supplies and canned goods to another county. On our way back we received a call from a coworker asking us to pick up a large food donation so three staff and two volunteers with a van, a car, and a suv picked up a BUNCH of cases of chicken patties! Catholic Charities does not have a refrigeration/ freezer storage so we called church food pantries, St. Vincent de Paul Societies, and shelters to ask if they would ensure people in need received them. Meat is not typically a donation a food pantry or a shelter receives so we were happy to deliver! Thank you to the donor of these chicken patties and thank you all who help those in need!

We forgot to get pictures of the others but they couldn’t see out their back windows either!
