Here are our May and June Volunteer Anniversaries! HOPE Helps serves hundreds of local families in need every week, it would be impossible to do so without the dedication, love, and selflessness of all of our volunteers. These individuals are what makes HOPE Happen.

A special thanks to Peggy Hardwood, who has been with HOPE since the very first day 19 years ago and has seen the organization grow into what it is today.

Scott and Derikka contacted HOPE Helps in December of 2025. They were behind on rent and ran out of ideas on how to get caught up. Their landlord did not want to evict them but relied on the rental income to meet his own financial obligations. Derikka is a full time caregiver for her disabled son from a previous marriage. He is in and out of the hospital frequently and in between, she homeschools him. She has tried to work in the past but can’t keep a job because her son needs so much care.

Scott is a disabled veteran. He had been receiving some support services through the VA but when the government shut down, that abruptly ended. He had participated in a jobs training program that unfortunately did not lead to employment. To make ends meet, Scott was driving for Lyft when he was involved in a car accident. The accident made him ineligible to drive for two weeks while Lyft investigated and cleared him to continue to work. For a family that was already barely getting by, that two week loss of income was the tipping point.

HOPE was able to offer the family Case Management to review what resources were available to them. Scott was able to share the job leads he was getting as well as the records that he was making sustainable income again from Lyft. Scott and Derikka participated in HOPE’s financial literacy program and met 1:1 with one of our financial counselors. HOPE was able to approve them for financial assistance and help them avoid eviction. We were able to give them a voucher to get necessary items for their home and some food to help hold them over. Derikka shared that she has never felt treated with so much dignity and kindness as she did at HOPE. She really appreciated the financial education they received and how we met them where they were at with kindness and empathy rather than judgement and indifference. Your support and generosity makes outcomes like this possible for many more families like Scott and Derikka’s. Thank you!
