Seminole County has reinstated the Burn Ban. Please be aware.

BURN BAN REINSTATED: Although the burn ban was lifted last week, Seminole County's drought index has once again met the criteria established under County Code, automatically reinstating the burn ban.

Under Seminole County Code Section 85.24, Burn Bans are automatically enacted when the drought index, known as the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), reaches or exceeds 500.

The burn ban will remain in effect until the drought index stays below 500 for seven consecutive days or until further notice. Residents are urged to use caution with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire and to remain alert for changing conditions.

Today, June 8, 2026, marks the 24th anniversary of the tragic loss of Oviedo Firefighter Shane Kelly (Badge #56). We continue to remember the life of Shane Kelly and the professionalism, dedication, and compassion he displayed while rendering aid at the scene of a serious traffic crash. We also remember Dr. Donald Diebel Jr., who also lost his life assisting Shane with administering patient care. That tragic day will always be etched in our memory, and we must continue to honor both Firefighter Shane Kelly and Dr. Donald Diebel Jr for their selfless service.

As we continue to experience retirements and change in personnel, I ask that we continue to remember and honor Firefighter Kelly and let us all never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made on June 8, 2002.

Just an FYI, the burn ban has been lifted.

BURN BAN NO LONGER IN EFFECT 🚨 Effective Friday, June 5, Seminole County's outdoor burn ban is no longer in effect due to recent rainfall and improving drought conditions.

Thank you to our community for your cooperation and vigilance in helping keep Seminole County safe during recent drought conditions.

Although wildfire risk has decreased, residents should continue to exercise caution when conducting outdoor burning activities. The Florida Forest Service advises that this year's wildfire season could extend into July or August.

Please help reduce wildfire risks by following these safety tips:
🔥 Never leave a fire, grill, or burn pile unattended
💧 Keep a water source or hose nearby
💨 Avoid burning during windy conditions
🗑️ Only burn yard waste permitted under state and local regulations. Never burn household garbage, plastics, or other prohibited materials.

Before conducting any open burning, check current conditions and permitting requirements through the Florida Forest Service at www.fdacs.gov/Forest-Wildfire/Wildland-Fire/Burn-Authorizations

Always have a fire escape plan for everyone in the house. Talk and walk through with all family members, especially the kids and have a meeting spot picked out. Make sure everyone knows the safest way to get out of the house should there be a fire. Little ones may get scared and want to hide, but the best course of action is to get out. Stay Safe!

Summer heat is back, and we want to remind everyone to check the back seat of the car if you are bringing the kids or pets with you in the vehicle.

With summer heat indexes exceeding 100 degrees F outside during peak hours in June/July/August, temperatures inside a vehicle can reach 130-140 degrees F.

Leaving children and pets unattended in a car, even with a window cracked, can be deadly.

Follow these tips and make a habit for yourself.

​📍 Create Habits: Put your phone, wallet, or bag in the back seat so you see the child when exiting.
✅ Check the Backseat: Always check for children, pets, and even sleeping babies.
🔒 Lock Doors: Keep cars locked to prevent children from climbing inside.
📞 Take Action: If you see a child alone in a hot car, call 911 immediately.
☀️ It Happens Fast: A car can heat up by 20 degrees in 10 minutes, making it lethal quickly.

Congratulations to Engineer/Paramedic Danny Forrest for being chosen as a First Responder of the Year from the Oviedo Rotary Club! Danny has been with the department for over 17 years and we are very proud of the work he does for the department and the community. Congrats Danny!

Today's storm is a great reminder to practice lightning safety. If you believe your home has been struck by lightning, call 911 immediately and our firefighters will come check out the house. We have the tools to determine whether there is an unseen fire in the attic or on the roof. If you hear thunder, know there is lightning, so get inside.
