This past Saturday, we joined Ray and at their local Food Heroes exhibit for a presentation about plants and compost. We shared about the importance of composting and its impact on the local food system with families.

We brought in some hungry worms and showed the living organisms in our compost under the microscope! The kids loved it! ๐Ÿ”ฌ ๐Ÿฆ  ๐Ÿชฑ

Make sure to check out the Food Heroes exhibit and the new 4roots Cafe there!

Just a pile of dirt? Look again. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿชฑ
How many creepy crawlers can you count?

During the composting process, the large black soldier flies are attracted to the fresh pile of food scraps where they will lay their eggs. Those eggs hatch and out come thousands of worm-like larvae. These black soldier fly larvae eat ~2.5x their body weight each day. Once they eat and process the food scraps, they excrete nutritious compost.

The larvae pictured have enjoyed their new home for about 14 days so far, and will stay for another 2 or 3 weeks before pupating and becoming flies.

Another great work day โœ”๏ธ
Thanks to The Grove for allowing us to help out our community. This past Saturday, we helped the kids and staff there revamp their outdoor space. The result? A beautiful serenity garden that will provide a therapeutic space to learn, relax, and get their hands dirty while planting, w**ding and harvesting.

Also a huge โ€œThank You!โ€ to the Oviedo Townhouse restaurant for providing the coffee grounds that we added to the soil, Big Daddyโ€™s organic farm for lending us a much-needed trailer for the day, and our good friend Jim for his help and imparting his knowledge on everyone involved. We canโ€™t wait for the next community work day!

Did you know that this Saturday, June 19th is Juneteenth? Juneteenth is recognized as a day when the last of our countryโ€™s enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, were told by Major General Gordon Granger, that they were free.

Juneteenth is about celebration and itโ€™s about freedom.

As a black-owned agricultural business, Compost Orlando is honored to celebrate Juneteenth this year by partnering with The Grove, an organization for youth recovering from substance use disorders. This community work day will be special as we get the privilege to come alongside The Groveโ€™s garden and walking path projects, and spend time with some awesome young people, and celebrate freedom together.

This weekend, and always, we amplify the legacy and the future of other local Black farmers and agricultural workers, like and others. Thank you for living Black history by feeding the minds, hearts and bodies of our community.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s on the agenda:

- Paint concrete blocks for new raised bed

- Clear brush around garden area, w**d area and transplant a few plants

- Rake/transport mulch from walking trail

- Plant veggies

- Build & plant new raised bed

- Mulch driveway between dorms

- Identify and clear walking trail
