Monday and Tuesday, into Wednesday afternoon I had a migraine from the nerves in my neck. Wednesday I was a little discouraged going to Detroit. There was a new arrival in the chapel waiting for his room assignment. I had a couple guys coming to check out chapel. Lately it's only been one guy. A 2nd new arrival was sent in. This one had been assaulted at another facility. I can only imagine how! He was pacing, punching himself, and throwing his property, cussing and yelling. The new chapel attendees left. I offered to pray with him, but he hit himself in the head and said no, he never gets answers anyway. I stood and prayed silently till my regular guy, Fredrick West, came in. I tried to have a lesson, but it was hard. The lesson was about the promise of peace not being in our surroundings, but in our hearts and minds. I ended early and gave Fredrick a care package I bring with me. I then took one to Andre, the young trouble man. He took it gladly. He then let me pray with him with my hand on his shoulder. The rest of the time he was calm. He shook my hand when I left and thanked me. He will be a target now that he showed he suffers from mental health issues. There will be others looking to push buttons to get a reaction, but there are several that came to comfort him as well. Pray for Andre.
Yesterday I loaded a truck full of stuff for a lady and her 5 children. I had a lady from church with me and picked up Fredrick West to help me. Her one young son and daughters helped carry things in. The boy must have been about 4. We cheered him on as he moved stuff to the back of the truck for the men to take in that probably weighed twice his weight. As we finished up the lady was holding hands with the women that came with me from church. She teared up when we prayed for her family. As we started to leave I had my window down and saw a small brown fist appear in my window. The little boy had run back from his family to give me a fist bump. Fredrick reached over and gave him one too, as he stood on his tip toes to try to reach Fredrick. The little 2 year old girl was waving and saying bye as we left.
When I dropped off Fredrick he hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. He said "This is what I want to do with my life. Please call me anytime you need help!"
I'm no longer discouraged!
