Patient #26-395 is home!
This Red-bellied Woodpecker came to us on April 29th unable to stand or hold himself upright. We suspected lower spinal trauma and a right ankle injury and admitted him into care.
Just two days into rehab he was airborne, wobbly but climbing. Over the next month he went from wing-walking just to stay upright, to gripping uneven surfaces with confidence, to evading staff during checkups. He aced his final flight test on May 29th.
On May 31st he was released right where he was found, at a park in Ste. Genevieve. Adult birds have mates, established territories, and survival knowledge tied to a specific place. Home isn't interchangeable.
