Patient #26-395 is home!

This Red-bellied Woodpecker came to us on April 29th unable to stand or hold himself upright. We suspected lower spinal trauma and a right ankle injury and admitted him into care.

Just two days into rehab he was airborne, wobbly but climbing. Over the next month he went from wing-walking just to stay upright, to gripping uneven surfaces with confidence, to evading staff during checkups. He aced his final flight test on May 29th.

On May 31st he was released right where he was found, at a park in Ste. Genevieve. Adult birds have mates, established territories, and survival knowledge tied to a specific place. Home isn't interchangeable.

🐦 Want to be part of a release? Our baby birds are growing up fast, and releases like this one are especially fun for kids and grandkids. Just reach out and we'll get you set up!

Check out our brand new chimney swift tower, hand built and delivered by Howard Beyrouty, owner of Iron Horse Industrial.

Chimney swifts have lost 74% of their population since 1966. They are listed as an Orange Alert Tipping Point species, meaning their decline is accelerating. One of the biggest reasons is simple: the old brick chimneys they depend on are disappearing, and modern ones don't work for them.

This tower gives us a way to properly rehabilitate chimney swifts in our care before they return to the wild where they belong. Howard built it from scratch, delivered it, and would not accept a dime.

This is what community looks like. Thank you, Howard. The swifts thank you too.

The cavalry has arrived, unbothered by the rain, and we have a feeling the birds are going to like them as much as we do.

Today we welcomed our 2026 intern cohort: three students and a volunteer who toured the facility, met the patients, and jumped straight into feeding babies. Busy season is in full swing and we did not ease them in gently, but they didn't miss a beat (or a mealworm!). πŸͺ±

Welcome to WBR -- we're so glad you're here! 🐦

πŸ“£ Due to staffing and volunteer shortages, we unfortunately will have to close our hospital to intakes early tonight, effective immediately. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

For any found birds that need assistance, please utilize our drop box placed just outside our facility at any time -- we check it routinely for admits.

If you are interested in volunteering, please submit an application through our website at this link: wildbirdrehab.org/

Thank you for your understanding. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts to the tops of some very tiny heads.

173 donors. $20,286 raised. Double our goal. Yesterday was our biggest Give STL Day ever, and it's not even close. When we hit $15,000, our Executive Director actually logged out and logged back in because she thought she was in the wrong account. But, she wasn't. That was just our community coming through in a HUGE way.

We are the only songbird rehab in Missouri and we receive zero government funding. Every bird we care for this baby season has a chance because of you. Thank you.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum -- two of our many grumpy-looking robin siblings nestling under our roof -- have just one question for you:

Did you know there's only 3.5 hours left for Give STL Day?! πŸ‘€πŸ¦

NOW is your chance to contribute towards our mission to support all of the native songbirds that come into our care for the 2026 season (and beyond)! We've hit our goal of $10,000 raised, and we are beyond ecstatic -- thank you to everyone who has donated and believe in us and the work we do! ❀️ Every dollar raised beyond this point continues to greatly benefit all of our patients, allowing us to consider purchases and upgrades that we otherwise would have never thought possible! (All thanks to YOU.)

🎁 Before Give STL Day is over, join us (and the Tweedles pictured below!) in our mission and donate here: https://www.givestlday.org/organization/WildBirdRehabilitation 🐦

UPDATE: To all those who guessed cardinal...you are correct!!! πŸ†

Since our last guessing game was so fun, we want to do a round two! 🐦🀩

This itty bitty baby has been learning to perch while eating meals, and is showing off identifiable markings...can you tell what species it is? πŸ‘€

The first person to correctly identify the species in the comments wins a copy of "My First Bird Book" by local author Allen Sherman, who was kind enough to feature Wild Bird Rehabilitation in the forward of his book and donate copies for us to share with our community. πŸ“–

3...2...1...GO! Drop those guesses below, and good luck! 🫑

To help us support more baby patients like this one, please consider donating to our cause for Give STL Day -- our goal is to reach $10,000, and we are getting so close! 🐦 https://www.givestlday.org/organization/WildBirdRehabilitation

Nobody asked them...but they have opinions anyway. 🀣

And their (adorable) opinion is to donate to us for Give STL Day! Our goal is to reach $10,000 to benefit our birds, and thanks to all of our incredible donors so far, we've just hit our halfway mark of $5k! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³ We have no matching donor this year, so ALL of our funds are solely due to your support -- and we are blown away already!

With each donation, we can continue to help thousands of injured, ill, and orphaned native songbirds heal, thrive, and move on to live their best lives out in the wild, like these three downy woodpecker babies you see here! 😍

Our faces when we realize that it's GIVE STL DAY!!! πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰β€ΌοΈ

Without our thoughtful and supportive donors, Wild Bird Rehabilitation wouldn't be here, proudly caring for and nurturing over thousands of native songbirds each year. Our goal this year is to reach $10,000 to continue providing the best quality care to our patients, including renovating and strengthening our aviaries, setting up new incubators for babies, and more! 🐦

We don't have a matching donor this year, meaning that it's just you, us, and some of nature's tiniest patients who are relying on us to ensure their survival. No matter the amount, every contribution matters and is critical to our hospital and the birds within.

β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή You can make a contribution on this special day through this link: https://www.givestlday.org/organization/WildBirdRehabilitation

(And just know that our expressions look much like this crow's whenever we receive a donation! πŸ¦β€β¬›)
