The Breast Cancer Club We believe everyone impacted by breast cancer deserves to feel supported and connected.

We are an independent Kansas City breast cancer community offering free, anonymous support and connection in over 100 languages to patients, survivors, supporters, and those at high risk.

The Breast Cancer Club was honored to give 210 new and gently used items to the Greater Kansas City Black Nurses Association for their breast cancer event. We donated:

🩷 49 wigs 
🩷 76 bras
🩷 62 hats and scarves 
🩷 11 mastectomy pillows 
🩷 6 breast prostheses 
🩷 4 drain robes 
🩷 2 wedge pillows

We're able to collect such a high volume thanks in part to our partnership with Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas. When donors mark items for The Breast Cancer Club, Goodwill sets them aside and gives them to us instead of putting them on the sales floor.

The Breast Cancer Club is proud to welcome Alyssa Jackson to our Advisory Council.

Alyssa is an Emmy-nominated reporter for KSHB 41 with six years of experience as a journalist. Her reporting for the Kansas City NBC affiliate often focuses on public safety, politics, community impact and accountability. 

At 26, Alyssa was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. Her experience has made her passionate about advocating for breast cancer survivors, especially young women navigating a diagnosis.

The Breast Cancer Club was proud to serve as living proof of the power of early detection at a wellness fair sponsored by the Center for African American Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The event honored the legacy of Broderick Crawford, a founding community advocate, and offered free health screenings and community resources (and line dancing!)

Had KSHB 41 reporter Alyssa Jackson handled breast cancer with extraordinary grace and not been only 27, she would still be amazing.

Had Alyssa endured an aggressive care plan due to her young age and not revealed her bald head on camera to raise awareness about breast cancer in young people, she would still be amazing.

Had Alyssa used her on-screen visibility for good and not put boots on the ground with The Breast Cancer Club, she would still be amazing.

Had Alyssa volunteered to help others with The Breast Cancer Club and not done so in the middle of her own treatment, she would still be amazing.

When this woman walked her young children over to the Breast Cancer Club's table at a recent community festival, I assumed the family had been touched by breast cancer. We don't ask, since cancer can be a tender subject. You are welcome to take our materials without having to explain why you want them.

The woman waited patiently while her kids poked around in our freebies, asking what they were and what they meant. They each took a few favorites, and as they walked away, their mother said, by way of explanation, "They're going to know someone with cancer."

I thought about that for a second and then caught up with her. What did she mean?

"Four out of ten people will have cancer," she said, which is true. "I don't want them to be afraid of the word. Or afraid of people with it."

I love that for all of us.
