Happy is the reason we pause. The reason we say yes. And the reason we keep going.

Happy was a community cat trapped at a large colony in Kansas City, Kansas. Once he arrived at the TNR clinic, we discovered Happy had been quietly suffering. He was underweight, battling painful mouth and eye infections and further examination revealed broken and dislocated bones. Despite everything he had endured, Happy turned out to be a friendly little guy who waiting for help.

Happy’s road to recovery wasn’t easy. He required extensive veterinary care, including a leg amputation to give him a chance at a pain-free life. These are the moments that shape what we do. Because we believe action is compassion.

Then something incredible happened. A vet tech at one of our partner clinics met Happy during a vet visit and offered to foster him during his amputation recovery. Well…you can probably guess what happened next.

Happy worked his magic. What started as a foster turned into forever and Happy officially became part of her family. Today, Happy is thriving. He’s gone from timid, fragile and sick to confident, healthy and genuinely happy. His street life, once full of suffering and uncertainty, is behind him. And now he has the life every cat deserves: safe and stable with endless cuddles.

If Happy’s story touched you, please consider donating so we can continue saying yes to cats like him — the ones who need us most.

We aren’t always trapping cats from large colonies! Sometimes random cats find their way to our homes and it’s still important to ensure they are fixed!

There’s something we see over and over in rescue.

Someone posts about cats outside breeding.
Kittens are being born. Cats are suffering. The cycle continues.

And what happens next?

People rush in saying:
“Are there kittens? I can take the kittens!”

But very rarely does anyone say:
“Where’s the mom? Let’s get her spayed.”
“Where are the other cats? Let’s stop the breeding.”

In rescue we have a term for this.

Kitten mongering.

It’s when people only want the tiny, cute kitten- not the older kittens, not the adults, and not the actual work of stopping the cycle.

Anyone can run out and scoop up cute kittens. That’s not rescue.

Real rescue stops the cycle.

If your “specialty” is only kittens, ask yourself why.

Is it because kittens are easier to place?
Because they’re cuter?
Because a litter of tiny kittens feels easier than taking in a pair of 5-month-olds or one adult?

Here’s the reality many people don’t realize:

• One adult cat often takes up less space than a litter of kittens.
• Older kittens (4–7 months) are still extremely adoptable.
• Adults can be some of the easiest, calmest foster cats.

And here’s another myth that needs to go away:

“Adults cost more medically.”

That is simply not true.

Kittens are actually the highest medical risk group in rescue. Young kittens frequently require vet care for things like:

• Upper respiratory infections
• Parasites
• Diarrhea and dehydration
• Fading kitten syndrome
• Emergency care when they decline suddenly

Anyone who has fostered young kittens knows how quickly things can go wrong- and how expensive those vet visits can become.

Adults, on the other hand, are often already past the fragile stage of life. Many simply need vaccines, spay/neuter, and a safe place to land.

Here’s another important thing to think about:

Kittens grow up.

While there are endless people wanting to adopt kittens, many of those adoptions are impulsive. When the cute baby becomes a teenager, or an adult with energy and personality, sometimes those same kittens are returned months or years later.

Then what?

If you only “do kittens,” where do those cats go?

Rescue isn’t about the cutest stage of life.
It’s about responsibility for the entire life of the animal.

Yes, kittens are adorable.

But so are 4-month-olds.
So are 7-month-olds.
And adult cats? They are some of the most loving, grateful companions you’ll ever meet.

Real rescue isn’t about collecting the cutest animals.

It’s about ending the cycle of suffering.

Spaying the moms.
Neutering the males.
Helping the older kittens everyone overlooks.
Giving adult cats a chance.

Because when we focus only on kittens, we’re not solving the problem.

We’re just making room for the next litter to be born.

Thank you Lawrence Humane Society for taking Farley into your care for adoption. He is such a special boy and we hope he finds the most amazing family to cherish him.

Grace was once a community cat, pregnant and struggling to survive on the streets. When she was trapped, she wasn’t outwardly friendly—but during recovery, she showed small social cues that told us she must have interacted with people at some point. It took a small circle of people who believed in her. Instead of returning her back outside, we took a chance.

Grace is the reason we do what we do. When we have the resources, we’re willing to go the extra mile if it means a cat can leave the streets behind and be given the opportunity for a better life. When you look at Grace now, you can see the change—the softness, the comfort, the safety she’s finally able to feel.

We are helping a woman in KCK who has found herself caring for several cats at her late mother’s home. The house is her childhood home, and after her mother passed away she took over the property, but no one currently lives there.

Inside the home is a very friendly mama cat and her three older kittens, who are now a little over six months old. They were born and raised inside the house and have never been outside, so this isn’t a typical TNR situation. The kittens include a fluffy white/gray, a tortie and a tabby.

The challenge is that while mom is incredibly sweet and social, the kittens haven’t had much hands-on human interaction. They see a few people regularly as the owner visits the house almost daily, but they haven’t been handled enough to feel comfortable yet. They are not mean or aggressive, just very timid.

We have vetting scheduled for March 14th and can cover spay-neuter, vaccines, and combo testing for mom and the kittens.

We urgently need:

1. Three patient fosters willing to work with the kittens individually and help them learn to trust people. While they are six months old, we feel that with consistent socialization, they may be able to come around given their circumstances.

2. Rescue or shelter placement for mom, who is friendly enough for adoption!

These kittens have only ever known life inside this home and we really want to give them the best chance at an amazing future.

If you can foster, help with placement, or know a rescue that may be able to assist, please reach out.

Let’s work together to get this little family the second chance they deserve.

We met this little lady today while out doing colony consults in KCK. This specific colony had already been fixed (a pleasant surprise) besides this one cat. Since the property is across the street from Quindaro Park, we assume she could have been dumped.

This poor baby was super thin and had a lot of raw itchy skin but was so desperate for love. Surprisingly, she had a green tattoo on her belly indicating she was already fixed. However, she did not have a microchip.

Thankfully, KCKAS took her in today so she can get the care she deserves. Thank you KCKAS!

Farley is an example of why we will always choose to spay a pregnant cat. It’s not because we hate kittens or don’t want them to exist. The reality is that we are already at crisis level — and have been for years.

Every new litter born means even more cats competing for the same limited number of homes. Meanwhile, cats like Farley continue living on the street because more often than not, kittens are rescued or adopted before adult cats.

Some people view pregnant spays as unethical. But in the middle of an overwhelming overpopulation crisis, it is more unethical to knowingly allow more kittens to be born when so many living cats already lack homes, safety and stable resources.

Advocating for pregnant spays is rooted from caring deeply about cats — not just the kittens who might be born, but the ones already here who are still waiting to find a home of their own.

We were honestly surprised by how many people wanted a Mad Cat Circle shirt — so we did a small run!

We have a limited number available for $20 each, with local pickup only for now (Overland Park or Lenexa for now). Comment below what size and color you would like to purchase. From there, we will message you with a link to complete that purchase.

This is just the start. We’re planning to design a handful of rad tees that help support our Mad Cat Wage Fund. Our long-term goal is simple: to fairly compensate the people who spend countless hours advocating for community cats through TNR efforts.

Every shirt purchased goes directly to that fund. Wear the madness. Help fund the mission.
