League of Women Voters of Johnson County KS

League of Women Voters of Johnson County KS Nonpartisan political organization, encouraging informed and active participation in government, influencing public policy through education and advocacy.

We welcome a diversity of opinions and encourage discussion of the issues on this page. We want to keep our page an open forum and make sure everyone feels comfortable participating. People are allowed to not like us and our views. That's part of the deal with being on social media. In general, we leave negative comments alone. Any comment increases your post in the algorithm so deleting

is not necessarily our best option. LWVUS does this. It's a balance between: Is this comment part of the discussion or it is something that could hurt our brand? If engaging is possible, go for it, particularly if you are concerned that the comment could roll into a crisis. This is more true on Twitter where things can go viral quickly. But more often, it's easiest to just let it go and leave as a part of our open forum. We want people to tell us what's on their minds, but if it falls into any of the categories below, we’ll remove it:

- We do not allow graphic, obscene, explicit or racial comments or submissions nor do we allow comments that are abusive, hateful or intended to defame anyone or any organization. We will not tolerate harassment or bullying of any kind. In other words, be nice and respectful of others and their opinions.

- We do not allow third-party solicitations or advertisements. This includes promotion or endorsements, in addition to attempts to defame or defraud any third-party organizations or groups.

- In order to maintain nonpartisanship, we do not allow endorsement or opposition of political candidates. Any posts by others about a candidate is not an endorsement or opposition by the League of Women Voters.

- We also do not allow spam. We encourage people to share material with us, but please remain germane and relevant.

- We do not allow comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity. Finally, you participate at your own risk, taking personal responsibility for your comments, your username and any information provided.

All registered voters can cast a ballot in nonpartisan local races and on the Supreme Court Justice Amendment—no political party affiliation required. Advance voting info can be found at: https://www.jocoelection.org/voting-election-info/advance-voting

The League's state board has taken a position against this proposed amendment. The League of Women Voters of Johnson County concurs in that position, which follows:

"The League of Women Voters of Kansas opposes the elimination of the Supreme Court Justices' Merit-based Selection System. We recommend that voters Vote NO on the Constitutional Amendment on the August 4th, 2026, primary election ballot." See our website for more details - https://tinyurl.com/LWVJOCO-SCJAmend

Under Kansas statute, the deadline to return your ballot is the close of the polls on Election Day. A district court judge in Douglas County has entered a temporary injunction altering that deadline. However, the Secretary of State, represented by the Attorney General, has filed a motion with the Kansas Appellate Courts to stay the decision so that the deadline remains the close of the polls on Election Day. Because of the legal uncertainty while the matter is pending on appeal, voters are urged to return their ballots by the close of the polls on Election Day. Doing so will ensure that their ballots will be counted.

Have you looked at your August 4 ballot yet? If not, you're not alone. The ballot measure is lengthy and filled with legal terminology, making it difficult for many voters to quickly understand that it would change how Kansas selects its Supreme Court justices. Many Kansans are seeing it for the first time when they open their ballot.

Before you cast your vote, take a few minutes to understand what the amendment would actually change, how it differs from the current system, and what those changes could mean for Kansas courts.

The proposed amendment ballot language raises more questions than it answers. An amendment to the constitution should be well thought out and vetted. Yet, this proposal leaves the actual rules of an election up to the legislature, which could change yearly. Will it be partisan or non-partisan? State-wide or regional? Filing rules? Timing? Campaign rules? Ballot format? Qualifications? Too many unanswered questions. The voters deserve better than "shall be provided by law".
